popping hood after driving

How many of you guys like to open up your hood after driving to purely let the heat out from under their? I consialy do it, expecially with the durango. Its just an habbit.

but i do not reccomend doing this while car is unsupervised)

Re: popping hood after driving

I don't know about every time, but I say I open the hood on my Camaros 5 times a week. I am a neat freak with my cars. I never wash them cause they are never dirty. This includes my engine bay. BTW, I check fluids when the bonnet comes up.

Re: popping hood after driving

If it runs, leave the hood shut. It works for brand new cars fresh off the showroom floor, so I rightly expect it to continue to apply forever, regardless of age, mileage or mods.
If you find legit need to pop the hood, then borrow a hole saw and fix the hood. Just behind the tops of the struts , slightly inboard. Then go earn some money, buy a better radiator, and a cowl hood in whatever style you fancy.
I've never needed a cowl hood for cooling, even with 800 horses.

Re: popping hood after driving

It's unnecessary. When you get old enough to drive save yourself some trouble and just buy a cowl hood.

Re: popping hood after driving

an cowl hood on an durango baurf! all the ones iv seen dont look good at all, there possibly one iv seen from an truck magazine but i would want an aluminum one anyhow and there all steel.

I know the durango's with leaving the hood closed because theres several places stock, and that iv modded to let heat escape but i just do it because thats how i am.

My 5.9 durango eats alot of the third gens it meets lol (305 TBI's). Just a parts hauler though not a race truck.

Re: popping hood after driving

im still kinda lost, i never said my durango was an "RACE truck" all i have said about it as i prefere to open the hood to let the head out quicker. Its not the usual beaten up one, mines near mint other then the recent dings that will be removed soon.

There quick (for an suv) off the line though, the aluminum heads of the 4.7 help

Re: popping hood after driving

Who said anything about your moms Durango?? Anyways, if you have your hood popped everyday people will start thinking theres something wrong with it and "I'm letting hot air out", just sounds like a lame excusse.

Its pointless.

Just sayin...

The reason we have cowls is to get a cooler intake charge, not to cool off the engine bay to keep the engine running cooler.

Re: popping hood after driving

You guys arent understanding what i mean, YES i know its basically pointless, BUT im that way, I figure it doesnt hurt anything to do it and I just feel MORE comfortable having the hood open then just letting heat slowly creep out. BTW i got the idea from an guy on dodge fourms, so dont blame me lol.

The only thing you're doing is wearing out the hood hinges and release mechanism faster.

Rapid temperature changes do far more harm than slow temperature changes. Go spray some ice cold water all over a running engine and see what happens.

Re: popping hood after driving

Starting in '87, it was common at the dragstrips to see the fuelie 5.0 Mustang guys poppin' hoods to put bags of ice on the upper intake manifold. TPI SBC guys tried it also, but found less benefit. I've seen ricers try it, with varying results. But it's a dragstrip-only thing.
If you're just poppin' after your daily commute, on a pure-stock late model, then you just seem like an eccentric person.
