5.7 cracked piston

so building a 305 is a joke right? i found a 350 with 1 cracked piston other than that it looks pretty good. supposedly it ran recently. i mean pistons dont just crack right?

should i stray from this?

could the crank be trusted for another block?

so many questions any advice on the matter?

he only wants 150 bones for it.

Re: 5.7 cracked piston

Not without a reason they dont, unless the part had a flaw and thats generally not likely. Where's it cracked?

Re: 5.7 cracked piston

If the bore isnt damaged (cracked, broken, etc) I'd use the block and rebuild it.... if it's a 1 pc RMS roller block.

I wouldnt just replace the piston and drive it, though.

Re: 5.7 cracked piston

well the broken piece is actually like a chunk straight off the top of the piston. you know looking down into the cylinder its off hte top of the piston you cant even see the crank or rod below it.

that being said is it actually a waste of money to rebuild this 350 should i stroke it? i mean for the difference in power and price has it been proven well worth the money just to stroke it?

and how on a bare block could i tell if it is 1 piece or two piece rear main seal

thanks alot for the help

Re: 5.7 cracked piston

Was it a fuel injected motor?

Sounds to me like somebody's Air/fuel ratio was way out of whack and fell victim to detonation. If the cylinder walls aren't scored (which I'd bet they are) I'd leave it stock bore. If you run your fingernail up and down the cylinder walls and it gets hung up anywhere, chances are good its garbage.

It depends how many parts you're replacing. If you need a new crank and pistons, then the material cost is the same.

Look at the rear main seal area.

Re: 5.7 cracked piston

can you get us the casting code? it's on the top driver's side where the transmission connects. that'll help.

Re: 5.7 cracked piston

That's an earlier 2 piece RMS block. The wide groove just inside the rear edge of the rear main is where the 2 halves of the rear main seal sit.

Re: 5.7 cracked piston

a chunk off the top, a broken ring land is usually the result of detonation.
