there is a tan wire with a black trace/line that must be dis-connected to set timing . called EST , electronic spark timing . it's located near the heater box , mine is between htr. box & A/C plumbing . there is 2 1/2" connector , dis-connect , set timing (mine is set at 0) , re-connect . should be good to go , good luck .

Do you have a stock timing tab, or a adjustable tab? Awhile back my adjustable timing tab moved caused I didn't tighten it down well. Which made me think my timing was some where else. I had to use a piston stop and find TDC for number one. I then re-adjusted my tab to the correct position, and all was well afterwards.

Re: Wont run timed @ 6 BTC
Lemme guess:
Stock balancer, replacement timing cover with bolt-on aftermarket timing tab; probably "chrome" :barf: ?
That combination puts the timing mark roughly 35° retarded from where it's supposed to be. Meaning, when you follow the "procedure" and "set" your timing, it will be approximately 29° ATDC (retarded), instead of 6° BTDC (advanced).
Best thing to do would be to locate #1 TDC by some ACCURATE means, totally independent of the timing mark, such as with a piston stop; make a new mark on your crank damper that lines up with 0° on whatever tab you have; and then you can use a light.
Or, you can just set it to where the car runs the best, and not bother with a light at all. Since after all, the engine doesn't whup out a light and look at the mark and decide how it's going to run; it merely responds to how the thing is put together. It doesn't need to see the mark to know what to do, you don't really either.

Find TDC with a piston stop and verify your timing marks.
