Re: shift light

You can buy a tach that sits on your dash that also has a shiftlight.

Or something at your local autozone, I know there is one in my store.

Re: shift light

There is the space and the printed colored part has the arrow with "shift" in the idiot light area of my 89 but no bulb. I wonder if I put a bulb in, will it light???
But whats the use!

If I can find mt spare bulbs and sockets when I pull my cluster so I can lube the speedo cable I'll give it a shot!

Re: shift light

yeah it should im not sure why the factory would let it roll off the assembly line like that though? it says on when in fouth gear, i used to have a 5 speed s10 that had that light. so im guessing the computer or sensor thinks i have another gear left.

Re: shift light

Is this like that "Power injection" on the dash of the grand nationals? (apparently they were going to do meth injection) but actually released the cars without it; yet it still has a spot on the dash if you shine a flashlight on it.

Re: shift light

There's nothing special about it. The same panel was used for automatics and manuals, the automatics just didn't have the bulb installed behind it. In earlier ECMs, the output driver for the shift light in manuals is used for the TCC signal in automatics, so you'd get a light that does various interesting things when the TCC locks and unlocks. In the ECM for a 91 I think there are distinct drivers for the two functions though.

Re: shift light

Im looking at a wire diagram and I believe somewhere along the line at one time someone put a bulb in there and that is why it lights.

The cavity on your ECM for the TCC is the same cavity used for the upshift light on a manual. The wire coming off the the same curuit also go to the light. The diagram just says "not used" for the auomatics and the wire goes to the same cavity on both.

So I bet if I installed a bulb it would also come one when the TCC engages.
When you step on the gas in 4th does it go out?

Ahh I thought you were talking about an aftermarket shift light, but everyone else in this post pretty much explained what I would have said.

Re: shift light
