Gas smell and wont start. Please Help!!
this weekend my wife bought me an 85 Z28 with a 305 TPI. The PO said that on the day that she came to look at it it fired up, then he went to get a new battery for it, because he had to jump it (it sat all winter). And then he came back and it wouldn't start. So i got it home and did a tune up (all but the cap, O'riley didnt have it) now it turns over kinda slow and it tries to start, but nothing, and i can smell gas pretty bad on the outside of the engine and i can smell it inside the oil fill cap and the PCV hole, and the plugs are soaked. Its kind of acting like its flooded. could the FPR be causing this, and is this the right firing order? and where does #1 plug wire go? i feel like a dumb a$$. Thanks for your help. oh ya and i already unplugged the cold start injector.

#1 plug wire goes wherever the rotor button is pointing when the engine is at top dead center for the #1 cylinder when #1 cylinder is on compression stroke. Then you follow the firing order (which is correect there).
So, if you removed the cap without marking what wires went where, then you'll have to
1) remove #1 spark plug
2) hold your finger over the #1 spark plug hole
3) have someone turn the engine over by hand until YOU feel air pressure pushing on your finger - stop turning motor.
4) turn motor either direction needed to get the timing mark on the balancer to line up with the ZERO mark on the timing tab.
5) wherever the rotor points then - that is the #1 plug wire at the corresponding spot on the dist cap.
6) follow remaining firing order

timing could be off if u took cap off,did that when i got my car couldnt figure it out,the cap was turned 14 degrees advanced
sounds like a weak or dead coil, because if the plugs are wet ur not gettin spark or enough spark or the(ignition control module) icm.icm can be tested at advanced but every time ive had mine tested they tested good but were bad...so i always buy a new one anyways, saves a trip lol
first get coil checked at advanced, and BUY icm(test lies) ,then have timing set

advanced can check it,because it can still spark just may be to weak to fire it up
(to much fuel not enough spark)
