Slight problem with idling...etc...
I have a 1986 Chevy Camaro Z28 IROC Z I bought about a month ago! Had quite a bit of issues in the beginning(still kinda am) but for the most part I have taken care of the main issues. For starters, the wiring was completely messed up and rigged having to do with the alternator and battery and such causing a major charging issue...well I have gotten that part taken care of(after opening up the alternator 3 different times replacing parts) mostly!! I have had the alternator, battery and starter tested after the 3rd time of me replacing parts in the alternator and everything read out alright. When I first got the car, I allowed(stupidly) my dad's "mechanic" friend to fix the wiring that was messed up prior to doing what I did with the alternator and wiring. Needless to say, this guy made things even worse for me because he made everything worse than already was and to top it off, he (without me telling him to do so) took out my Purge Canister Solenoid that has the hookups for the vacuum line and fuel line/hose and a much much smaller line that hooks up to it, and also the air pollution(smog control) stuff on the left side of the engine, if you're standing in front looking at it, which has made my car obviously go through EVEN MORE gas than already does considering it also does not have a MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR, which I kno it definately needs. Well pretty much while driving the car, it will drive and get up no problem, however, i can feel it chug slightly while I am driving, which I'm thinking is partly because of the stuff taken out that I didn't agree to. But anyway, when I first start it, it holds a normal idle until I start driving it and come to stop signs/lights and then it wants to die out on me! It will start back up no problem, but I am just wondering if these reasons could possibly be why it is doing these things?!?!? Also, I replaced the positive and ground wires with 4 Gauge wire to possibly make things run a little smoother charging wise, however, the ground that is bolted to the engine block, well the wires aren't totally clamped completely to where technically you could wiggle the wire while it is crimped and bolted down to the engine block. I thought about maybe replacing the ground wire with one from the parts store that is more durable and maybe that will help out, but then again, there is also the wire that comes off the back of the alternator and i'm assuming runs down to the starter, well the way the previous owner had the wiring, i currently have that wire off back of alternator wired into a little bit thicker red wire going down to the starter. Sorry for so much typing btw, just hoping someone can give me some insight as into what I can do to fix this problem. Because with the wiring and everything having to do with the charging, it's obviously charging no problem, but if i'm driving at night, I notice that if I give it more gas, the headlights will brighten more than what they would usually be and then upon easing up on the gas, they go back to normal.
So the obvious things I know I need to take care of so far, Spark Plugs, Mass Air Flow Sensor, Purge Canister Solenoid and Air Pollution(Smog Control) stuff needs to go back in, which I still have, and possibly replacing the wire coming off the alternator down to the starter and a new ground wire...and then I am hoping that takes care of the problem. That is why I am on here in hopes that someone will take the time to read this and hopefully have some info in regards to this...I know the MAF is very important, however, I got the car without it even in there and it's kinda expensive at the moment so i have to hold off, but if anyone knows anything of what I am going through, any information would be greatly appreciated...THANKS
