So, list of upgrades....
deleted A.I.R., deleted egr and egr solenoid, deleted emissions, deleted smog, deleted a/c, deleted heat. installed headers, deleted catalytic converter, magnaflow catback. edelbrock hiflow lower intake and runners. cold air intake with k&n conical filter. replaced o2 sensor, replaced mass airflow sensor, e3 plugs, new wires, oem replacement coil, new cap and rotor, new fuel pump, new injectors, new fuel pressure regulator (oem replacement for 305), timing is set.

car continually running rich. smells of raw gas to the point it burns the eyes. engine shakes while idling and backfires randomly when accelerating. it will idle for a while till it loads up enough to back fire and kill the engine. i am at a loss. i ohm'd the injectors and all of em have same resistance. no fuel leaks and no vacuum leaks.

anyways, i am out of ideas and would like to pick all of your brains... give me some ideas please.

 

Maybe your CTS has gone bad. It is on the front of the intake manifold towards the driver's side. If it gets stuck and tells the ECM that it is -40, the ECM will richen the mixture. You can ohm it when cold and again when hot, they need to be different values.

Put stock ACdelco plugs back in it.
recheck the plug wires 4 burnthru and correct order.
Check fuel PSI.
Buy a MSD or some type of ign box.
Also sounds like a few injs my be bad.

 

Check fuel pressure for bleed down when engine is off. Does it have a cold start injector?
Check the ecm grounds too.

 

new injectors, new fuel pump, new injectors. the fuel pressure does bleed down overnight.... no cold start injector. put all new wires on it... i will check on the plugs... i have had e3's in it for 3k miles, but they could be bad, who knows. new cts, i did that when i did the 180 thermostat. i like the idea of a msd box tho.

 

my throttle position sencer went bad an caused mine to run rich .( 12.9 air fuel while cruiseing , 10.9 wot ) i'd check that if i was you .

 

I'd start by putting a 195* stat back in it.

 

When you deleted your egr and emmisions , did you get that stuff deleted in your computer prom also? Maybe your car is making up for a lean condition and richening up?

 

Check your fuel pressure. You need to check it with the car idleing and the vacum hose to your regulator disconnected and plugged on the manifold side of the hose. That is your true WOT fuel pressure. What size injectors did you use also? I would check that first. Do you smell gas?

this will not cause car to run rich.... car runs and holds temp perfectly

i didnt think deleting AIR egr and emissions would make it run THIS rich. anyways. getting this taking care of. appt is set with a guy i know to take a look at the tune.

stock 305 replacement injectors. idle fuel pressure is 38lbs. i dont smell gas and the only long crank times i get are on a cold start. the rich condition is causing the strong gas smell coming straight out of the exhaust. so rich it stings the eyes after a few minutes of running. no smell engine side. i checked for vac leaks with carb cleaner.... nothing... i have an appt for a tuner to check into this ....

 

get a wideband air/fuel gauge so you can see what your a/f really is . i'd never tune without one . aem makes a good one i'm running a night glow with a bousch senser that seems to be good also .

 

i have an LC-1 wideband. this is how i know it is running rich.... i have hptuners. have been tuning for 6 years on newer vehicles, but this old. i dont have the equipment for it unfortunately.

 

what are your a/f at idle , crusing an wot ?
