I was having recent problems with my carb not letting me get past 65pmh but now once my engine warms up I can go about 25mph and the car will just shut off while driving. Its not anywhere close to overheating as my car has run pretty cool since I've owned it. If I turn the car back on and go I can go maybe 1/4 mile at 25mph max and it will shut off again. Any ideas?

If it just shuts off suddenly, sounds most likely an electrical problem. Check all connections and grounds. Not sure if u have this symptom - if it runs ok when cold but dies when hot, only to behave normally once cooled down again, might be icm in the distributor.

How do you check the icm?

 

Over here in Oz, had to just buy a new one myself. Over there, from what I've read places like Autozone can test them. Icm is just a guess, go the logical route and check wiring first. Using a meter, can you verify that the coil is or isn't getting power when it dies?

Otoh, what did you do with the carb recently?

 

I havent done anything to the carb on there. The shop did something a month ago when I bought it. The only thing I've actually done is change the choke out with a new one but when I pull over and check it the choke flap is all the way open. Maybe my a/f ratio is a tad off? Recently you can smell gas even when its driving normally.

 

Doesn't sound like anything that would cause a sudden shut-down, just rough running or low power etc. Sounds like there are carb issues as well, but I would still be looking at ignition system first for the shutdown problem.

 

Ya ill poke around the ignition system and see whats going on. I'm rebuilding another carb for it right now actually, just need to get a few pieces and it'll be finished.

 

my carbed 350 im my 86 did the same thing,i found out after a lot of goofing around that my fuel pressure regulator was bad,after swapping in a known good one it runs like a top,that was a little over 6 months ago!

 

I might have to check that out. Im guessing the fuel pressure regulator is on the fuel line going to the carb? I get a lot of hesitation in acceleration to.
