so in my 87 camaro, small block 350 tpi, we have sheared the bold heads off the thermostat housuing. one of them has a little stubby sticking out still i tried channel locks and vice grips but the bolt is stuck. well they both are, i have tried sprays, tapping with a hammer. every little trick i know. any help or suggestions would be great.

 

Try an easy out, they always work for me. Any auto parts store should carry them or harbour freight.

 

u think it will work for the other one to? they both broke but only one has a stubby. the other is flush with the manifold. thanks

thanks everyone decided just to replace the intake manifold way safer route prolly same head ache.

 

Grind or file the bolts ABSOLUTELY FLAT; mark them carefully in the EXACT CENTER with a center punch; drill STRAIGHT into them with a small bit, like a 1/16"; re-drill with successively larger bits until the remains of the bolt come out; finish with the bit for a Heli-Coil of that size (will take a 25/64" bit", Heli-Coil them, and put back together with STAINLESS STEEL bolts.

No need for replacing the manifold. Especially since there's no "direct" "replacement" available except a junk one which is equally likely to have the EXACT SAME problem.

 

Yes it will work for both.

drill a small hole in the center insert easy out and turn till it comes out.(use heat if needed)

Best to drill and pick out the remaining bolt or use a reverse turn drill bit that grabs the last bolt parts out....When the easy-out snaps off you will add 2 extra hours tryin to get the hardened metal out....

 

Avoid EZ-Outs... about 99.999% of the time they break off, and then you have a REAL mess on your hands, because they're ALOT harder to drill than a bolt.

Drill it. Don't try the other.

 

I usually go the drill out route too if access isn't an issue but I've also heard you can weld another bolt on top of the sheared off bolt. Might have the same issue if it's still really seized but it may be another option.

 

Correction. Not another bolt. A nut and weld inside it to the sheared off bolt.

 

And use anti sieze on the new bolts before you put them in!!!

 

There's been many times where I couldn't get a bolt off with channel locks or a vice, but I like to always keep a pipe wrench handy because the way it gets tighter as you turn it, has always worked for me on any occasion.
