Yay.. engine wont crank, how original...

Alright, here is the problem.. I have a 1990 iroc, 355 tpi and it just wont crank over. I'm at the gas station filling it up and then i try starting it, when the problem first began it was in the process of starting and then it just decided not too, the engine was actually cranking and then it just stopped.. I tried cranking it gain, I also heard the fuel pump starting before i did. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS.. I hear it trying to crank, but it doesn't i just hear one stroke and then there is smoke, not a lot.. but enough to notice. It seems to be coming from somewhere on the right side of the car(starter?). so a good friend of mine came over, we tried jump starting it. That didn't wont, we tried his ta's battery.. that also didn't work. fast forward to 2am.. i get it towed back to my house. Now that I have let the battery charge over night i tried again, no dice. Now, this has happened before, the last time it happened it was because i had loose connections at the terminals, now i have them as tight as hell so i doubt that is even a issue. I probably wont be back to reply to this for a couple hour but input would be very appreciated .

Check the starter out, pull it out and test it a few times. Hook it up to a spare battery or whatever. Sound like its not engaging im sure you know. So with it out you should be able to identify the problem. check the flywheel gears too

Yep, well I got the starter disconnected. I just have to get the exhaust out of the way so i can actually remove it. Mehh.. Its times like this when i realize I need to invest in a cheap economic daily driver, any thoughts? Haha.

You can't get the starter out just by tipping it? It took me awhile and a lot of adult language to finally find the right position but I was able to get it out without taking off the exhaust.

Yeah, unfortuanatly that wasn't going to happen for me, believe me i tried! It probably has someonething to do with the headers and y pipe and what not. It just wasn't going to budge.

Sorry, I missed the part about headers. I have a stock system. With headers, best to get the mini starter.

Okay, so starter came in sooner than usual . However, when i was taking the old one out a senosr popped out of its little fitting and i believe its probably broken. Its mounted on the passengers side cylinder head and its between cylinder 6 and 8. It looks like a metal prong, does anyone know what this could be before i take a picture and what not?

I think it is the temperature sensor for the cooling fan.
