Carb/Intake/Head matching

Hey guys,

I am buying some of the last parts I need for my engine rebuild and think I may have ran into an issue. First off I have a 1974 small block 350 and I sent the original carburetor to a carb guy and he rebuilt it and it looks immaculate. 2nd I never intended to get new heads, but I had to since the stock 882's weren't worth the money to repair. I now have a pair of new Dart Iron Eagles (lower end) and need a new Intake. I was in contact with a tech at jegs and he sent me an edelbrock rpm performer with the wrong spread. I had given him my head numbers and told him i had a Q-jet. Not the only thing the tech f***ed up. I haven't talked to them yet, but I did a little research and I am worried now. Is there a intake manifold with the spread bore style for Q-jets that mates up with these newer Dart iron eagles? If anyone can help me out I would be much appreciative and relieved Rebuilding an engine and restoring a car has it's peaks and valleys that's for sure.

Re: Carb/Intake/Head matching

Unfortunately the Qjet intakes generally arent quite as good as the spreadbore intakes. The Performer RPM is an excellent intake, but if you're set on using the Qjet you're probably gonna be stuck with a regular Performer intake. The Dart heads should have a standard chevy intake pattern. Any vanilla Edelbrock Performer intake will work, but it's a step down in performance.

Do you have the hood clearance to run an adapter/spacer for the Q jet?

thanks for the reply, I don't know about clearance my engine is on a stand completely torn down right now. I thought for the older rochester q-jets you need the spread bore style intake, are my right on that?

You do, but there are adapters. Not the ideal solution, but an Edelbrock Performer intake isnt really an ideal solution either for other reasons. Which is best will depend on how much hood clearance you have. You'll probably need to rn the regular Performer. It would probably suit your needs a little better anyway.

Re: Carb/Intake/Head matching

be careful with dart heads. on the intake side, they have a area that humps up between the water port and the intake port.

some intakes will leave a hole where you can see right into the lifter valley.

do you see where the intake dips down in the same area?
but it looks like you will be ok with the performer and performer rpm intakes

Ya I do see a possible issue there lowrider. Umm Infernal so your recommending to get a adapter plate through edelbrock for the performer. Because it seems even the spread bore style intakes don't mate up with my heads.

No. THe performer wont need an adapter plate. The performer is already spreadbore (it's compatible with both actually).

The performer RPM would need an adapter something like this:

Re: Carb/Intake/Head matching

There's a Performer RPM Q-Jet.

Just return whatever you've got and get this one instead.

Interesting, does that have the same runners and everything as the regular RPM?

Re: Carb/Intake/Head matching

Hey thanks infernal and sofaking. Looks like I will be sending back the square bore and get the correct spread bore. I talked directly with the guys from jegs and told him exactly what I needed. Guess all there experts maybe aren't experts at all lol. Previously I had only went thru summit but I seen jegs prices were a little cheaper for my latest wants. Appreciate the help fellas
