Partial 305 overhaul/paint

Alright. I have an 8484 camaro 305. I bought a couple months ago. I decided to do a partial overhaul and all new gaskets just for the experience. As im fairly new to mechanical work but i have some help from my cousin who has done rebuilds and swaps many times. I took the whole engine apart and cleaned everything! I proceeded to paint it peice by peice. The block is still intact and i have not disassembled it. I had the heads magnafluxed and checked out. Valves were all good and everything looked peachy. Im currently doing a bit of porting. Mostly cleaning up imperfections and blending the seats into the bowl. This engine is only an lg4 im considering doing a new camshaft and talked with the ghy at summit racing. Found one thats ca smog legal for about 140$ that comes with lifters and should bolt right in. He says no adjustments to springs or timing belt should be needed. Its an edelbrock flat tappet and the part number is edl3702 im curious what type of gains i would make wih this and if a new exhaust is necessarry or not. I want a broad rpm band boost but dont want to kill my torque. I know these lg4s are a bit chocked off as it is. I dont want it to hurt my engine if the exhaust chockes it super bad. Any ideas of gains without new exhaust. Or with?

Re: Partial 305 overhaul/paint

definatly do an exhaust system upgrade-at least to L69
specs-headers,good y-pipe,2.5-3"exhaust,good flowing
cat if you have to run one,ETC.May have to rejet the
carb for best results. This, plus what you have done is
pretty close to what i did to my '82 LG4 to "wake it up"
back in the early '90s;i got a big increase in power and
RPM capability with no noticable loss of bottom end
torque or economy.I did not port my heads,so you
could get even better results

Re: Partial 305 overhaul/paint

Thanks for the reply. So i decided to buy that cam mentioned earlier. Its here in 2to days. Im also thinking about grabbing a new chip but i dont know whether to just grab an l69 chip feom a junkyard or maybe buy 1a from a website called pcdchips. My engine is carbed and the chip is adjustable. Its supposed to do better mileage or more hp depending on the setting. Has anyone had any exp with this site. Im thinking maybe i could just keep the chip and up timing. Although a 60$new chip that can give up to 60 hp or 4-7 extra mpg would pay dor itself pretty quick and be fun when i want it. Any ideas. Maybe i could just rejet?

Re: Partial 305 overhaul/paint

the L69 used a knock sensor and ESC module with it's
ECM-L69 chip might not work right in LG4 ECM.
Probably could add L69 knock sensor,ESC and ECM to
your car though.

Re: Partial 305 overhaul/paint

Where does the knock sensor go. Could i even add one to my block. I thought they only started doing knock sensors in any camaro in 85to or 86. And that pcd chip is supposedly plug and play for 60$a sounds maybe to good to be true. Any one else have good ideas for chips

Re: Partial 305 overhaul/paint

Knock sensor just threads into the RH block drain in
place of the hex-head plug normally in place there-
fits any chevy block.knock sensor usage started on 3rd
gens with 82 CFI cars,then '83 L69 with lg4s getting it
in '85.Some '81 up 1/2 ton pickups got knock sensor
too"Electronic Spark Control"emblem on those trucks,
in those, only the distributor advance was electronic
control-carb was still non-CCC.

Re: Partial 305 overhaul/paint

The whole ecm and harness attached would probably cost a bit. And who knows if there would be any real gains
