OK Jcaldwell oil pumps are not that exspensive to buy brand new, what motor do you have and what is the problem with the oil pump.

Re: Rebuilding oil pump

not really any rebuilbing that can be done with the oil
pump-you can take it apart and check for wear though;
look for scratching and gouging of the housing where
the gears turn and the drive gear shaft and housing
bushing for wear and excess clearance.All the above
wear conditions are likely to be found if a lot of miles on
pump.Racers will often take apart a new pump and
check clearances,port/radius a few areas,add balance
grooves to cover plate etc.

Re: Rebuilding oil pump

Well I a 89 350 and the bolts to the oil pump run down form the main bearing cap into the oil pump and I cant get the main bearing off because the oil sits under one of the main bearing bolts and you can rebuild them nothing to it just wanted to know if u could do it while it's still on the block

Re: Rebuilding oil pump

Is this making any good sense to anyone else? Un-bolt the pump from the rear main cap, it's no challenge. Then do whatever you like, then torque a pump back in position. Simple.

Yes you can. Unless you want to change the clearances..

Re: Rebuilding oil pump

Hmm? For one thing, there are only two moving parts to the pump. These are the gears that make up the pump. I guess there are three if you include the relief valve. They are not available for replacement since they are a fine tolerance part and are sized for each pump. You were already told that the key to the oil pump is the clearance between the gears and the thrust surfaces of the pump case. There is nothing you can do to correct a worn pump but to replace it. Also, if you do disassemble the pump be sure to align the marks on the gears during reassembly since they are balanced together.

I have never heard of rebuilding a Chevrolet V8 oil pump and I've been in this industry a long long time. Just replace it and torque the bolt to 65ft lbs. The best oil pumps are Melling. They make an excellent high volume pump for the small block chevy that uses a bolt on, 3/4" pick up tube versus the stock press in 5/8" tube. Are you having trouble getting the bolt loose? You need a long 1/2 drive breaker handle and a 5/8" socket or a big **s 1/2 drive air impact to do it.
