305HO
Apart from that, the "HO" attribute did not live in the block, while it existed. The BLOCK was identical, in every detail, to the weenie LG4 and LU5 that were available at the same time. It is DIFFERENT from the block in TBI 305s such as would have come in a 90 RS however; the later blocks are equipped with the 1-pc rear main seal setup and the factory roller cam setup. But, since "HO" (as distinct from its weaker cousins of the time) wasn't a function of the block but rather of the pistons, heads, cam, & exhaust, then changing ALL of those things as has been done to your engine, would render "HO" inapplicable to it.
In short, please disabuse yourself of repeating .... that .... in every post you put up. It is inaccurate and misleading, offensive to those of us who ACTUALLY DO have the "HO" motor, and makes you look like you don't know what you're talking about.
Anyway...
Yes a low-perf RS would have come with a TERRIBLE gear; 3.08 probably. Yes it's awful and makes the car hard to drive. Yes 5th is worthless until a very high speed. Not much you can do about all that except change it, and just deal with it in the meantime. Hard to say what might be in it now if it's been "replaced" though; it's not impossible that somebody put in an EVEN WORSE one, such as out of an even lowlier 305 TBI w auto trans, which would have come with 2.73 gears. Alot of the 305 TPI/auto cars also came with that. Might not be a bad idea to pop the cover off and look.
As far as it not running right, start with verifying that the plug wires are installed in the correct order. Find #1 TDC (specifically, the instance of #1 TDC that is #1 firing, NOT the instance of #1 TDC that's the end of the exh stroke and start of the int stroke) and mark your crank damper, and set the static timing to about 15° advanced, and see if that makes any difference. Make sure the valves are adjusted correctly. Then it's time to work on the carb, whatever kind it is (hopefully not an Edelbrock); make sure the fuel level is set correctly, then visit the carb board and read the "sticky" posts at the top to learn how to tune it.
Re: no power engine...
I just discoverd that the vacuum advance was bad so I have replaced it. Must have been running around on base time.... Dont know what base is supposed to be but I'm going to try 15 for startes....and that could be way off we'll just have to see.....

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TALKING TO SOMEONE YOU DONT KNOW THIS WAY

I think I'm talking to someone who not only doesn't know what they're talking about, but also is rude and doesn't accept TRUTH very gracefully.
Your posts are inaccurate and misleading, and OFFENSIVE besides, because you are using "HO" as A BUZZWORD and applying it to something it doesn't belong on. (a TBI motor)
I'm not surprised you found your problem; as you may have noticed, a timing issue, as you were pointed towards.
Glad I could help. You're welcome.

I'll cut some slack assuming you were quoting the documentation that was provided with the car that referred to the engine as "HO". But, everything else sofa said was accurate (except I could add that the timing should be set with the vacuum advance disconnected - since most carbs are set up with ported vacuum advance, though, it often doesn't matter).
I would also suspect that the documentation that was provided with the car is inaccurate about the "vortec heads" part, as that is often used to extract excessive funds from the ignorant and unsuspecting. A picture that shows the arrangement of the intake manifold mount bolts would allay or confirm my suspicion. If in fact the heads are center bolt valve cover and not actually "Vortec", then I would say whoever did the work and provided the documentation was a low-down bottom-dwelling cheat and liar.

Re: no power engine...
Why are all the posts " . "?
I think what sofa's saying is that anybody with a 305 thinks its a HO. Not every single 305 was a HO. It does throw people off because if you ask for help with an HO engine but you have a regular 305, people are going to be giving you the wrong information because they think you have a different engine. Its like someone said (may have even been sofa lol) somebody would ask "what kind of door handles do i need for my 99 Z71 (truck forom)" It doesnt matter if its a z71 or base silverado, they have the same door handles. However in this case, it does make a difference, and a pretty substancial difference too.
As far as what 5.7kid said, im not positive how you took offense to what he said.. He never called you ignorant he just said that the seller may have lied about it to make his car sound better so you or somebody else would buy it. I dont see where he took any shots at you.
And to be honest, i hate seeing full messages in all caps too. It makes it 10x harder to read (for me, maybe not everyone) and it gets frustrating too, makes me want to stop reading. If its hard for you to see, you can zoom in on the screen making the text larger (if you have an apple its the Apple button and the + or - button, or if its pc you have to go to the "view" tab at the top of the screen i believe). I think you can even change the text size while posting a respone here if you click the "post reply" button. Or, you can type in all caps as you do, then just highlight all the text and lowercase it (or just leave it all lowercase and be extra careful what letters you type in XD)
Not trying to be rude to you, Im just trying to help you out. I can understand where your coming from, but i also see what theyre saying. Hopefully this helps
