Help me get this starter out!

I have a "stock" 1991 Z-28 with a 5.7 TPI. I am replacing the starter, which broke the nose cone??, and can not seem to find a way to get it out of the car. It is unbolted but how do I get it past everything that is in the way. It will not go up. It will not go down. How is this done?
Thanks!

Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere

With extreme ease.

Rotate the brush end up (nose down), solenoid toward the front of the car. Make sure your face is not right under it, because it will fall out.

Installation is the reverse of removal.

Thanks. If it can be done them I will figure it out. It looks like the exhaust pipe needs to come down for it to fit.

It does a very effective job of giving that illusion, doesn't it?

It'll come out just like Sofa said. It's all in how you orient it for the drop. Then it's like "look out below!" Plunk, it's out.

Re: Help me get this starter out!

Let it drop down and lay between the control arm, block and exhaust. Lower the car down on the ground. When the control arm compresses up, the starter will fall down...

Re: Help me get this starter out!

Thanks! You guys are great. I got the broken starter out, installed the new starter, only to find that the parts guy sold me a starter for a large flywheel. SO I removed the wrong one and installed the correct one. I am very good at changing the starter now. Every thing is working just fine finally. Thank you so much for the info on how to change it. Now I know how all to well.
