Shifting issues with Auto

Hey guys,

84 T/A, 355, 700R4 tranny.

The car shifts fine when I'm jsut cruising and not driving hard.

However, if I get on it, at any speed in any gear, about 50% of the time, when it shifts from 2-3 or 3-4, it'll "miss" the gear and just spin.

For example, the other day I went to pass a ca on the way to work. Slammed the pedal down at 45mph, the car shifted down from 3rd to second and I took off. As soon as the car went to shift back to third, it shifted, I could fell it coming out of 2nd, but it never hit third, it just spun...as if I were in a manual and gunned it in neutral. I let off the gas, the RPM's came down the car made a not so nice clunk/grind sound, and went into gear.

this only happens when I'm under full throttle. If I just ease through the RPM's or gears, it shifts fine.

What could this be? Time to rebuild the tranny?

Tranny was rebuilt about 7 years ago to replace a front pump seal and I added a shift kit. I still had the 305 in it.

What does your transmission fluid look like, any discoloration. I might be that the 3rd and 4th gear clutches are worn out.

The transmission fluid is at the full mark and is a dark red, almost brown/black red, but it doesn't smell burnt.
