cam questions.
i just ordered a accel billet dist. accel 8.8 wires. 65k coil for my 86 bird. i also ordered a gear drive. the motor is a all stock 305 with a quadrojet. i will be changing the intake and carb in november. then adding headers in december as it already has a cat back system.
i need help with picking a cam and lifter set. want more power but using same internals. im looking to get about 250-300 hp in the end. i am going to be getting a summit cam and lifter set for 100. but dont understand all the duration stuff.....any help would be great

Buy headers, but DO NOT get ones for your LG4. Get ones for about a 88 L98, and the cat & cat-back to match. No doubt your existing cat-back has a 2¼" I-pipe, since it bolts up toyour LG4 crap; thereby preserving the LG4 bottleneck, NO MATTER WHAT ELSE you do. Gotta go. Yeah I know; JUST DO IT anyway.
Skip the Summit cams. Get a REAL cam, not a copied generic copy of a generically copied copy of a generic copy of a generically copied copy of a generic cam. The Comp XE256 is known well and widely to work well in that motor. I'd suggest that instead. Or, the smallest Lunati Voodoo cam, 60101 I think it is. Np matter which one you get, use whatever valve springs the mfr recommends. Yeah I know; JUST DO IT anyway.
Then get a 4th gen rear with 3.23 or 3.42 gears, and a converter with about 2400 to 2800 RPM stall.
Use your money wisely instead of ... that other.
You won't get any 250 HP out of it, no matter what all else you do, but you'll get even less if you throw away your money on stupid stuff like gear drives, especially while leaving the bottleneck (the coffee-stirrer-sized stuff starting with the Y-pipe and ending with the muffler) in place.

Re: cam questions.
Yeah everybody is looking for "cheeeeeeeeeeeeeep". So what.
Skip the gear drive. Does absolutely nothing constructive WHATSOEVER. Waste of money when you want to be "cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep".
The difference in cam price is PEANUTS. You'll spend THE ENTIRE difference in the price, in your first tank of gas. Why "settle" for something you'll hate EVERY SINGLE TIME you drive the car, over a coupla PENNIES? Do it once, do it RIGHT, enjoy it forever.
Take your pick RIGHT NOW. You wanna make your car faster with the least amount of money? Do what I say. Or, you just wanna spend money and turn bolts? Your choice.
If your intake is cracked, that's a different matter; replacing broken parts is kind of ... unavoidable.
If your carb needs rebuilt, rebuild it. AHELLUVALOT cheeeeeeeeeper than replacing it.

Re: cam questions.
intake for cheap: stock jy pull. you may even get a bite from a post to the parts wanted section here.
if you replace the carb you'll also have to replace the distributor. assuming yours is the computer version. the ccc-qjet can be rebuilt for around $50 although be prepared to pay $20 or so for a TPS that is likely bad.
If I were after a reliable, 20+ year old camaro (kinda qualifies reliable) that averaged 20+ mpg, I'd take the time and effort to understand the stock system and keep it in good repair. Along with a good exhaust and a mild cam change you can get some pep and still save money and aggravation over the long term.

Cheap doesn't mean stock. Just don't waste your money on things that aren't better than stock.
