How can i get that turn key once start

Ok so my tpi 350 motor has trouble starting in just a few seconds like an average car, you have to pump the gas a little, and usually try startting it for 6 seconds a few times then the battery goes dead sometimes, then agin it will start rite up ocasionally. Anyways i just bought new ac delco plugs since old ones have some rusting, and im thinking about getting a new starter if needed, because i dont know what else could help as fuel system is clean

It can be so many things from a stupid little sensor, fuel filter, injectors bleeding, tune up, ground wire, battery, or weak starter... it's one of those things you have to know what you are looking at.

Re: How can i get that turn key once start

If your pumping the gas before you crank the engine, thats not going to do anything. Its a fuel injected engine. Usually extended crank times can be caused by bad fuel injectors, not enough fuel getting to the engine(fuel pump issue), slack in the timing chain or timing could be off, just to name a few. My iroc cranks for about 3 seconds before it starts up. Just have to start eliminating things by doing some tests. First thing to do would be to check for codes and go from there.

Re: How can i get that turn key once start

Clean IAC ?

Fuel Pump ? Trigger it 2 times make sure gas is flowing. Turn key, then off, turn key again after a few seconds. If fuel line is cracked inside tank, allows fuel line to lose prime, fuel runs back into tank.

Last - TPS, set to correct voltage ?

If your batt goes dead after 6 sec of cranking I would be getting the batt checked
If the voltage goes too low while cranking ( because the starter is sucking all the power) then there is not enough power left to run the computer
The computer shuts down below a certain voltage ; 10V?

Ya the battery doesnt go dead that quick lol it takes a few 6 second starts for it to not be able to be turning the motor over fast enough for a start, but the battery is actually 650cca, but i got tested and its putting out like 605cca now anyways im going to replace fuel filter, spark plugs, and disconect a peice from fuel line and suck on it to see if there is good flow

how do you check for codes, sorry but this is my first fuel injected vehicle, all previously carbed trucks

After my EFI course we found 9.5V was almost always the magic number.. But yes, 10V can barely crank the engine ... Good call

6 sec cranking is not much ; if you said it won't start after 15-30 sec then you may have a problem
Current is one thing but what volts do you have when cranking over?

Won't prove anything; you need pressure
Have to measure the fuel pressure available at the engine

well i only keep cranking it fr as little as possible, and when ur trying to start a vehicle you cant tell if she is going to start or not anyways, earlier i had to put some fuel on a shirt and put it in front of throttle body just to start it, then it died a few times while sitting untill warmed up, but it ran ok up and down the street for about a total of 8 miles then i gased it hard and it died and rolled rite to my house like 10ft short though. Also it hasnt stayed running more then 4 seconds or so since and thats with the shirt there with the gas when starting, but i can hear some gas in the tank when rocking it, but i dont know how much so ill buy 5 gallons tommoro and hope for the best (im out of gas) and prepare for the bad (my fuel line, pump, or intake is bad or plugged up)

Re: How can i get that turn key once start

Oh ya i forgot to tell you guys but here is something i found funny.
Alright so rite before my house like a good 1/10 mile there is a house and the guy there has about a 9-10second drag 1965ish mustang (not good with the exact years) and i had already been driving by this house like 4 times since i went up and down the road, and the last time passing it I roasted my tires for a good 50 feet maybe and then it started putting and died anyways when i stoped rolling i pop my hood then hear vroom crackle crackle crackle, anyways its the mustang and he is revving it up and im like f*** this guy wants to race and this truck is way slower then that beast lol so anyways he just keeps idling then shuts it off after a good 2 minutes so i guess he though he scared me off or something, but i think he though i wanted to race since i kept driving by his house, anyways I never have met him but next time this truck is up and running ill maybe stop by and check his stang out, anyways i thought it was kinda funny earlier since i live in a pretty boring small town, and i live near the baddest looking and sounding car

If I get below the 1/2 mark on my fuel gauge, car will stall when making a left turn ....

You got to fill it up a good way - get pressure going, make sure the cap is tight so it pressurizes.

Ok ill add 5 gallons tommoro and see if it starts and runs, also is making sure some fuel squirts out the fuel rail valve a good way to check if it has some fuel ready to start it or ? Also where can i get a gauge to hook to that valve so i can always have the fuel pressure gauge to check? Thanx

Buy a -4AN gauge adapter like that ( also need a -4 AN cap to seal the open end ) which screws straight into
the pressure test fitting on the fuel rail ( have to remove the valve inside the fitting 1st ) and then the gauge
screws into the side port.It can be R/R without dismantling the intake which some gauge fittings require

Need a 1 1/2" fuel pressure gauge 0-60 or 0-100 psi ; the larger gauges in that listing will only work
if you remote mount them somewhere with a line to the fuel rail

You need to make sure your battery cables are good too. They corrode from the inside, which you can't see. The positive cable goes to your starter. I would replace them too.

And I'd get the alternator checked. If it only cranks for 6 sec before it starts dying, and you've already had the battery checked, the alternator may not be up to snuff.

Correct. I've actually had my '02 refuse to start because I've pumped the gas by mistake, got too used to pumping the gas on carbed cars that won't start at work.

While cranking over, once the throttle is open past a certain % the computer shuts off the injectors
because it thinks you are trying to clear a flooded engine.
As soon as you let off the pedal it will fire the injectors back up

wait so im not supposed to push down any on the pedal, to open the throttle body so it can smell the gas and start off the fumes, or is t better to keep cranking it with out touching the pedal any?

A properly setup EFI should start with little or no throttle ( assuming you have basic things like gas in the tank)

It doesn't " smell" the gas , there are fuel injectors that SQUIRT fuel in; that is why it is called FUEL INJECTION

A carb relies on the air passing through the carb to SUCK the fuel in which is why you have a accelerator pump
on a carb to squirt raw gas in ( hence "pumping the gas" ) when you want to start ;
same effect as pouring 1/2 cup of gas in

well obviously i didnt mean actually smell the gas, but if u put gas on a rag and put it on throttle body it starts up every time rite away, ii's hard to explan what it is it does

Which means you have no fuel while cranking over,
either the fuel pressure is too low ( pump not priming the system , fuel reg leaking pressure , etc) or the computer is not spraying the injectors

Re: How can i get that turn key once start

but it runs fine once it's started and will usually start rite back up if it dies, but the rag just helps it start the first try of the key, but it will start after awhile without a rag with gas, also if the valve on the back squirts out fuel then that means its getting fuel rite, like if i squirt it all out then wait awhile and there is more then that would mean im getting fuel correct, thanx

Re: How can i get that turn key once start

Knowing what year the car/engine is would help... Some models have a 9th injector to add additional fuel to startup when cold.

Just knowing you have fuel AT the engine isn't enough. It's HOW MUCH and at WHAT PRESSURE. If the fuel pressure is too low, for whatever reason, you will need to wait until if or when the pressure rises enough for the fuel to actually get into the engine.

Also, if and when you go to replace the battery cables and/or battery, make sure that all the hardware on the posts is nice and shiny, almost as it was brand new. Any nastiness on the hardware takes away battery power from where it's needed the most (starter and ignition).

Re: How can i get that turn key once start

well i think you hit it on the spot maverick as my late 80s tpi 350 is now not starting, and im thinking the fuel pump is bad anyways in anther thread i was told to get a fuel pressure tester and check, so if its low, i guess it wuld make sence why it would have had trouble starting at times, anyways thanx for all the help but now i just need to get it running before reliable lol

Because as explained above when the car sits the fuel drains out of the lines and for whatever reason you
are not getting the fuel needed for the cold start.
Once started once there is fuel in the lines already
You are going to have to work through the various parts of the fuel system ( both fuel and elec ) to find
out where your cold start problem lies
