tbi to tpi complete motor and tranny swap

Alright guys, I need yalls help! I wrecked my beloved 89 iroc 5.7 350 tpi TPI a little while back and was going to try and find a new body for her and fix her back up.. Well turns out my new body for her isnt going to be another iroc anymore my tranny just went out in my daily driver as well as the motor running like crap (hydrolocked it the other week) in my 87 K5 blazer 5.7 350 TBI.. Now if I was rich I would fix them both but I'm only 22 and my company shut down about a month ago so I'm having to live and figure out how to do this on fumes.. Both transmissions are 700r4's

Both vehicles are in the driveway ready to go. I can take everything need off the iroc. But I just need to kno everything needed..

Things I kno I need-
  • Motor
  • Transmission
  • Wiring Harness
  • ECM
  • Fuel Pump

Now my questions are-
I'm assuming I need the Vacuum system from the iroc, but is there anything else I'll need to switch over other than listed things I stated above?

Will I be able to use exhaust and exhaust manifolds already on truck or do I need to keep the ones on the iroc motor? and does anyone know if those will have clearance in the blazer?

Are the tailshafts the same on the transmission since they are both 700r4's, or are they different due to the iroc being 2wd and the blazer is 4wd? and if they are different, will I be able to change them?

I'm sure I'm missing some things so any help and advice is great!! Thanks guys!

Heres some pic's of the iroc and blazer

So the bottom line after all that is you want to know how to put a TPI setup in a non TPI car ????
Plenty of detailed online info if you Google

You use whatever is in the truck
To keep 4WD , the 2WD trans is going to have come apart to install the special short output shaft from the 4WD trans
that goes into the transfer case; unless you convert to 2WD which is a whole different scenario

Re: tbi to tpi complete motor and tranny swap

I've been trying to find anything and everything on the swap on google and kept getting sent to build threads that turn into dead ends and are pretty much useless! but thank you for those links! I glanced at them quickly and look like its exactly the info I need..

and I guess I'll have to change the output shaft then. Do you kno if when I take that part of the tranny will I need to replace any gaskets or anything or is that an area without gaskets?

thanks again!

You realize for a quick and dirty way of getting your truck running, it would be easier to put the 350 under the TBI intake ;
therefore you would need no changes as far as fuel lines , ECM and wiring , etc.
All you would have to do is elongate the 4 center holes in the TBI intake to suit the different angle used on the late centerbolt heads on your L98

Re: tbi to tpi complete motor and tranny swap

yes I could do that. But the TPI intake better suits my truck because I can run a snorkel somewhere to stay away from water while playing in mud and water. the TBI set up isnt really water tight and water easily slashes up into the intake. Plus hoping to get a little bit better gas mileage with the TPI.. hopefully

Might be better asked in the driveline section
Not sure if this is a " do at home " job.
There is only one gasket to take the tailshaft housing off but I don't know if you can swap the output shaft from the rear
or if the whole trans has to be dis-assembled to pull it out the front
