Engine has no power

whats up guys. Ill get to it. i have an 89 formula 305 tpi. I recently replaced my plugs wires rotor cap fuel filter and injectors. Now my problem . When i start to let out on the clutch it takes almost everything the car has to go somewhere. it will sit and idle fine but when you give it gas it has no power. It takes a good 7 to 8 seconds to get through first gear. I recently replced my stock injectors with single holes where the fuel comes out to ford 4 hole injectors. (sorry if hole isnt the word). But i am baffled at why the car has no power now. My old injectors, 3 were not working so i replaced all 8. The engine also doesnt rev up as fast as it should in nuetral or with the clutch in. So any ideas? thanks for the help. car has 125k on it fuel pump replaced 4 years ago. I also have an open exhaust no cats or muffler.

Re: Engine has no power

Did you do the work on the fuel and ignition at the same time? Or did you complete one, then run it, and complete the other? It would be easier to isolate the problem if they were completed individually. What is your idle like, as far as steadiness and rpms? Any shaking while getting up to speed? And, does your exhaust smell rich? Have you checked fuel pressure after you installed those injectors? This could be as simple as an HEI lead swapped to the wrong cylinder. If you swapped injectors, are they the same fuel pressure rating (19# maybe?)?

Re: Engine has no power

I did the plugs rotor cap individually ran the engine ran a little better had a shop check it out told me it was injectors i replaced them. The are 3lbs above the stock injectors. Would 3lbs really matter? and i havent actually took a wiff of the exhaust but i will today and it holds a steady idle at 7 to 800 rpm. only when i give it gas is there no power. and if i mash the pedal to the floor real quick while idleing there is a delay of like a asecond before the rpms start to shoot up. and double checked all my wires they are all to the correct cylinder and lead on the cap

That was my next thought as well. I've seen symptoms of what you're describing with an EGR valve incorrectly hooked up, but I know that's difficult to screw up with vacuum controlled via a solenoid. Maybe you vacuum isn't hooked up to your FPR?

Re: Engine has no power

im not too familiar with the whole egr stuff. then again thats why i have no cats lol could care less about pollution my car isnt gona hurt. but My egr lines i have 2 metal hoses that were going to my cats one hose for each cat and i cut them and now they are just hanging there completely open. Would those two metal lines be the egr lines? and if so would they cause my car to do this?

Re: Engine has no power

Those are your AIR lines. Your egr has one vacuum line and the egr itself sits on the back half of the intake manifold in the center. Maybe you swapped the fpr and egr vacuum lines? I'm trying to remember how long each of those are and whether that's possible. If your egr has constant vacuum you are suffocating your engine. What is your fuel pressure, and what type of plugs did you use?

Re: Engine has no power

Sounds like the ECM has died or gone into the "limp-home" mode.

See https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/dfi-...home-mode.html

Have you pulled your codes?

Re: Engine has no power

Since the ECM controls the SES light, the light may not display properly if the ECM is compromised.

Re: Engine has no power

That's true. well I'll go and double check all my lines soon. Here in Rochester the weather is grey in grey skies and pouring so worst comes to worst I'll buy a pcm from my local auto zone if its not the problem just return it. I did have a heater core leak real bad a couple days ago but I bypassed it for now. Could the antifreeze have leaked onto the pcm?

Re: Engine has no power

I assume you mean ECM when you say "PCM."

As for whether the ECM is trashed, I suppose a flood is as good an explanation as any.

I wish I knew of a way to test the ECM other than replacing with a new, and if the problem goes away, only then do you know for sure the old one was bad.

Yes I mean ecm. And flood? If u mean the heater core yes. I went to my car the next day with a puddle and I mean puddle of antifreeze in the passenger compartment on the floor

Re: Engine has no power

I believe the ecm on 89 or all third gen Firebirds is behind the dash on the passenger side. Correct me if I'm wrong

Re: Engine has no power

Seems a lot more likely that something went wrong with the parts you were working on, such as the injector swap, rather than that the ECM just randomly died the same day.
Was it already doing this before the injector swap?
