Need help understanding how an ez out works
I was removing my holley intake and i broke the heads off the two corner bolts for intake. Now they were turning before they broke aswell so shouldnt be to hard, i have heard of an ez out or easy out before and whatched a video of a guy remove a broken bolt with it but this is what i understand how it works.
1.You get a super thin drill bit like 1/8th inch thick and you drill a hole in middle of broken bolt
2. then you get the easy out tool which idk what it looks like, but anywyas you then take it and drill it in untill it grips the bolt then you reverse drill it back up.
Is that rite? If so could someone recommend a cheap ez out kit i could get for under $30ish thanks

Yeah, you've got it right, turn them out by hand, not w/ a drill.
I like to use a welder to get broken bolts out, the heat of the weld helps loosen the broken bolt.

EZ- outs have left hand threads. meaning that when you turn them left/counter clockwise, they thread in, rather than out, like your standard bolts do. The purpose of drilling the 1/8" pilot hole is for the ez-out to have something to thread into and bite down on. As you turn your wrench left it bites down harder and threading the broken bolt out.

Ok so to heat it up some could i use a home made torch lol, a bottle of axe and a lighter? Or will it not get hot enough to matter? Also If the pilot hole is 1/8th inch then what size ez out do i buy because the bolt is 1/4in wide so it needs to be smaller then that rite?

Re: Need help understanding how an ez out works
There are difrerent size easy outs on the shelf for different size bolts. Choose one that is small enough to work with your application but also large enough to remove this bolt. Be CAREFUL that you do not snap the easy-out off inside this bolt or you are in for a world of hurt removing both the EZ-Out and the broken bolt.
I have drilled bolts out by starting small and increasing my drill size until there is just the shell of the old bolt left to remove. Heat also works well to loosen a bolt but you will need a torch set-up. MAP gas or propane never gets hot enough. Whatever you decide---go slow with it.
Good Luck!

Re: Need help understanding how an ez out works
Also when you say drill it out, did you mean to use a super small bit like 1/16th , then 1/8th, then the next size up etc untill the bolt is almost gone then just take a screw driver and bust whats left in half? If so is there anything i should be cautious with doing like not going to fast while drilling? Thanks and it's my first time messing with a broken bolt and my first motor install so im trying to do it all rite.

Re: Need help understanding how an ez out works
Usually there will be a recommended size drill bit to use with your ez out. Go slow and work the drill bit sizes up to the intended size. Then you screw the ez out in like a tap. Turn to the left and it will bite into the broken bolt. Of course the easier way if there is enough clearance and enough bolt/stud left is to use vise grips and turn it out. Good luck.

Re: Need help understanding how an ez out works
I would buy the EZ out and give it a try---just go SLOW and easy and if the bolt doesn't turn, stop before it breaks. If the bolt isn't all corroded---it should come out clean. Also, soak it down with penetrating oil or WD40 before you start.

Re: Need help understanding how an ez out works
Well the ez out didnt work, so i un bolted the intake bolts and discovered the damn thing doesnt have threads in the hole so i could have just pulled it off from the start. Anywyas i used pliers and got the one out, and didnt try to har on the other yet but it should come out easy.
Also my one grabit broke out on a bolt i tried removing from the front driver side head at the very top, and idk yet if i need a bolt there or not but i am about to go check but i think i dont lol.
