Car won't start, help....

Hey guys so yesterday I decide to go hang with some friends. Take the car & runs great! I meet up with my buddy's & when I go crank as we where going to eat....NO CRANK....nothing...nada...zilch. I checked all the fuses, relays, etc... all is good.

I wait until the car cools down & STARTS right up?? Like nothing nothing ever happened. Get to where we are going to meet, but we park in a spot & decide to move the cars closers, then guess what, NO start again, dead. It does NOT crank, but the fuel pump is priming & all.

Ok to summarize, the car cold starts PERFECT, but it will not crank/start until the car cools after I drive it. I think its the starter, opinions??

Do you have headers that run close to the starter? Do you have heat-shielding around the starter? My guess would be that the starter solenoid is taking a beating from the heat...

Re: Car won't start, help....

Most likely. just needs a starter.

Next time is does it, try this:

Have your "assistant" hold the key in start, while you reach up under it with a BFH or a tire tool or something similarly substantial, and whap the starter. If it starts, you need to replace the starter. Do not "rebuild", do not "look at", do not "investigate", do not even "ask questions", on the Internet or anywhere else; go directly to "replace", and move on.

Thanks guys that's what I figured. No headers, I still have the stock manifolds, but no heat shield (not that I know of).

It did something similar about 1.5yrs ago & I replaced the starter. In all fairness I got a cheap rebuild from O'reily's. This time I might try to find a new one instead of a rebuild.

Re: Car won't start, help....

I had an old Chevelle once that would do that exactly. I found it would start with a boost when hot, the extra voltage must have been enough to push the hot starter solenoid.

I'll let my battery plugged on my "battery tender junior" this week to see if it makes any difference and maybe change my starter.

Put some kind of heat shield or wrap on it and you'll be golden.

If you guys think so...I'm a little bit surprised that it could be such an easy solution...you know when there's so much relays, old wires and electronic module under the hood!
