need help! Better response with my setup
need help! Better response with my setup
Hey guys so I have a few things I really do need help with.
1.) when driving around it sounds and feels like my car stutters for half a second and happens quite a bit.(fuel? Vacuum?)
2.) I will be driving for maybe 20 minutes and try to punch it. It will stutter pretty bad and almost die. Again (fuel problem?)
I have a edelbrock carb, intake, with a chevy 350 crate engine.
If u need any other info let me know! Will post pics

Re: need help! Better response with my setup
It could be all of those things. Those wires look new though, so that's probably not it if they are. If it's intermittent but not specific to one or a couple of cylinders, I would check the gap on the spark plugs or the coil. If you can isolate it to one or a group of cylinders (even intermittently) I would replace the cap/rotor. If you have a timing light, you can hook it up to each wire and check for the light pulses while revving. I had an issue where I had a random misfire that was significant enough to notice while driving. I used the timing light to isolate it to cylinders 3 and 5, which told me it was probably the cap and rotor and so I replaced them.
On a side note: if you have the funds, just replace the cap and rotor if they're old ~$35 at Autozone. The coil is cheap too ~$27 from Autozone.

Hey man thanks for the reply! I will replace cap and rotor this weekend! I gap the plugs around .45. I've heard .35-.40 is perfect. And I'm not sure if I have a timing light or not. It's just bothersome cuz I'm losing power somewhere and I think it's that misfire/ whatever it is. I should be pushing a good amount of torque and power but I'm not getting what I want. I will get new spark plugs/ rotor/ cap.

This is all assuming it's not fuel related. If you're pushing too much fuel and driving the AFR too far down this could happen. I'm assuming too MUCH fuel, since it sounds like it's worse under heavy throttle. If the cap and rotor doesn't do it for you, check the jets for your primaries. Also, have you tuned it at idle?
Re: need help! Better response with my setup
No tune at all. Except playing around with the idle screws a bit. How would I check the jets? Aren't they inexpensive also?
Side note: would seafoam possibly do anything?
If anything I am gonna get a new distributer all together, new wires with more ohms, and high performance plugs.

Also I think I might have too big of a carb! I have a 700cfm pretty sure. And I put it into that calculator and I should be around 600-650cfm! How big of a difference would that make with fuel and everything?

Jets aren't expensive. I think you can get a whole kit of them for around ~70, large and small. It's a little troublesome to take the carb apart, but not hard. There are plenty of good videos on youtube to walk you through it. Your carb is a little big, but I think you can re-jet it and tune it to get it to run better. If you have a vacuum gauge, you can tune the IMS for the idling AFR.
No to the seafoam, and I wouldn't replace that distributor unless you think it's bad. I don't know how much of the old ECM and electronics you're using, so it's tough to say what you should mess with regarding the distributor, but leave that alone for now and go for the carb. That should take care of your problem seeing as it is a little large.

Ok so ima start on the carb today. Once I get my tax return I'm more than likely gonna buy a 600 cfm carb. Or do you think 650? I'll probably buy the re-jet kit also just to have a back up carb that can run. As far as the ECM half of it is useless. Thanks for the help I will be on here a lot asking questions.

Personally I like to get used ones cheap and rebuild them

Generally a 600cfm carb can support 350s up to 400hp
If you get a 600 edelbrock you will probably want the 1405 you NOT the 1406 they are jetted differently
