Hot Starter ??

I rebuilt my 305 adding many new parts but when I shut it off, it is hard starting and the starter struggles . It has headers, bored .040 over and a mild cam, new starter, new 650 cca battery.
I tried adding a wrap around the starter, NO CHANGE. I've been told it needs a hi torque starter due to the header heat and another guy said put a bigger battery in it and add a metal heat shield to it .
So I'm wondering if any of you had the same problem and how you fixed it before I throw more $$$ at it.
Any input is greatly appreciated, THANKS

And Happy Fathers Day to all dads here !!!

Re: Hot Starter ??

I have longtube headers and run one of the mini starters and have no issues. I've read a lot of stories on here of people with the bigger starters and headers having heat soak problems though.

Re: Hot Starter ??

Your choice rebuilt or aftermarket.

Permanent Magnet Gear Reduction-stay away from direct drive starters, they should be outlawed

Rock Auto

I admit, though, that I recently went ahead and paid like $30 extra to buy a PMGR starter to fit my 168 tooth flexplate motor in my TA (shop for starter for '98 C1500 5.7) at AZ (Autozone). Something to be said for being able to swap it out down the road if you have trouble.

You would need one from a '96 LT1 Camaro.

Re: Hot Starter ??

So the pmgr is better than a direct drive ? Wish I knew that before I got the other one. And it won't drag when the car has been running ?
I've never had this problem b4 on other cars but I also never knew how bad the engine compartment is for airflow on a 3rd gen. I didn't have the lower air dam in when I was driving it cuz I hadn't buttoned things up and man was it warm when I popped the hood lol !

A thousand times over.

? If the starter continues to spin, with a whining sound, after the key is turned back from start to run, it needs to be shimmed.

Re: Hot Starter ??

It doesn't just spin, it makes the dead battery sound like it needs help to crank th motor but not when I start it cold, only hot.
I'm gonna check on the PMGR starter this wk, not sure what I'll do with the old NEW starter ... GGRRR
