Car shut off while driving, no power now

My car just shut off while I was driving home. The ignition has no power to it, no check engine light, wont crank over, no power windows or anything. Only the head lights work. It looks like a burned a wire I had run in the car off of my headers. It was powered 12v with key on. Does it sound like my ecm shorted out when this happened. All fuses in the car and under the hood are good.

Did you check the fuseable link down by the solenoid or I've seen some with it by the battery box

It doesn't have one by the solenoid. Just the ecm fuse near the battery.

It sounds a lot like a fusible link burnt at the starter solenoid. Your 85 should have them.

I'll check it out. I have innovative brand battery cables on it though. I think they only have the one spot for an inline fuse, which I checked and its not blown.

You are totally misunderstanding what we are talking about. These would be the two smaller gage wires that bolt on the starter with the positive cable.

There will be no actual fuse to check it'll look just like a bump in the wire like it was spliced at one time with key on make sure you have power on both sides with a test light

Yeah this sounds like something fundamental at the starter post to me.

Thanks for the replies. I know what you mean now, I thought you guys were referring to the ecm fuse. It looks like it is bad. I'll get a new one and see how it goes from there.

Literally the same thing happened to me. Turned out to be the alternator. If anything just take yours off and take it up to Autozone to have them test it for you. With a core charge you should be able to get it for around 103$ Hope this helps.
