is there a way to stay in open loop mode?

hypothetically, if there was, could you drive around in open loop indefinitely?

Yes. You could. The ECM looks at coolant temp and O2 "cross-counts" primarily to determine when it can start to trust O2 sensor readings for closed-loop operation.

Re: is there a way to stay in open loop mode?

My car after it's warmed has a small lag after you hit the gas, the rpms drop slightly before revving up, if your cruising, it's noticeable, i'll hit the gas, nothing will happen for a second then it will take off. But it doesn't do this when it's first started and still cold. It seems to happen after it switches to closed loop and starts reading from the O2 sensor.

i wanted to test a theory that the lag would disappear if I remained in open loop and ignored the O2 readings. how could i keep it in open loop?

Wanna stay in open loop? Disconnect the O2 sensor. It will set a code though.

Fix the problem, you'll save a lot on fuel mileage when it's running right.
I'd check fuel pressure & bleed down rate. Ohm the injectors when their hot.

i do want to fix it but want to be sure it's O2 sensor before i buy one. if when running in open loop my acceleration lag and rich fuel smell is gone then i can be sure.

what is a good bleed down rate? ohm on injectors is good.

Could be one of your air injection solenoids pumping air into your manifolds instead of the cat when the car is warm

89 formula TPI,

Delete just means either I did not feel the information I submitted was prevalent or poor advise.
I really need to re-read my reply's before I hit "Submit".

It simply said leave the "EST" disconnected.
That deals a little bit more with timing and might be poor advice.
It is a simple way to do it but might put the car into "limp" mode

"i do want to fix it but want to be sure it's O2 sensor before i buy one"

When exactly did you buy your last O2 Sensor? It's 20 bucks.

Why is it that some people will spend thousand of dollars on wheels and tires but when it comes to buying a cheap azz sensor that probably hasn't been changed since it left the factory, is such a big deal.

Oh well, whatever
