comp xe274 in a 305?

I just bought a dual exhaust for my 87 Monte carlo 305 with a edelbrock 600 holly intake/ headers and before I knew it I had the engine and cam out of it I had a free cam I was going to use but it looked worn so I ordered a xe274 cam and am just curious if anyone has ever tried it in a 305? What were your thoughts of it how did it run?

Too big for factory compression ratio.
Plus, you'd need some serious gearing and torque converter to get useable power out of it.
That's a flat tappet cam. Isn't your block roller?

I run that cam in my 355, great cam but a bit much for a 305 and it will not be happy on lower compression. If yours is a 87 block get a roller cam.

I agree XE274 is too much cam....You should consider stepping back to something like this. Advance it 4* to sit on a 104* ICL. 87 Monte should have 081 heads and a flat tappet cam stock. I have only seen a few 88s with roller cams.

Too many different criteria have to be met to make that cam work, but if you do hit them, it will be a terrible daily, but it will be very, very quick.

Re: comp xe274 in a 305?

Cam is on the large side. If you can I would get a stall converter in the 2,500-3,000 RPM range and some 3.73 gears to go with it. The cam will have a slightly higher power band in your 305 than it would have in a 350. I would look at getting some aftermarket 305 heads or having 1.94 intake/1.5 exhaust valves installed in your heads and having them milled if you plan on keeping that cam in the 305.

Re: comp xe274 in a 305?

Thanks for the responses, For some more info I left out my car has 3.73 gears shift kit 1800 stall although im sure more would be better. 9.5 compression also not a roller block. Again just to update so u guys have more info. Planning trick flow 58cc heads in the future but I don't have the money rite now.

Re: comp xe274 in a 305?

1800 stall is about stock. It won't like that 274 cam

And honestly for that cam you probably want 4.10s. That cam in a 305 is borderline in terms of streetable. You'll need a lot of compression too.

Re: comp xe274 in a 305?

The stall is too low but every thing else will be fine. The trick flow heads would be awesome but your almost border line being able to get a rebuilt 350 with some 2.02 heads from a machine shop for just a little more cash.
