Re: problem RPM jumping
Have you visually inspected all spark plug wires for burns and made sure they're all snapped on the plugs and distributor cap and coil?

Re: problem RPM jumping
That wouldn't cause the problem but some burnt wire or wires grounding on your exhaust manifold would.

Re: problem RPM jumping
But you were already checking the spark plug wires at the distributor. Just follow them down to the plugs checking for burns and making sure they are snapped onto the plugs...

Re: problem RPM jumping
Removing them 1 by 1 will make it easier to put back correctly after visual inspection.

Re: problem RPM jumping
You should be able to reach around enough to check them. I had this problem a lot with my z28 before selling it. They would get on the manifolds. Some of the plugs you have to get under the car to get.
I know that when the wire did get burned it would run fine till it grounded out on the manifold car would lose power overheat ect... That's when id get to lookin around and find the burnt wire.

Re: problem RPM jumping
This could also be caused by a bad ignition module. Just had the one in my 91 go out last week. It will cause the same problems with the tach jumping and the car surging and finally stalling. It's worth taking it out and having it tested.

Re: problem RPM jumping
the 1 on the left is your idle air control valve. The 1 on the right is your throttle position sensor

Re: problem RPM jumping
I would recommend a jack since it would be more useful later on. Also for an ignition control module you would have to replace it. It's about $50.

Re: problem RPM jumping
My 1989 Camaro IROC-Z has the 5.7L V8. I have replaced everything under the hood except the throttle body. I have even replace the IAC valve on the throttle body several times. Every now and then after driving the car on the highway for awhile and then coming into a town with a red light, I sit there waiting for the light to turn green and while waiting there, the tach tends to rev up and down and then the engine stalls. Could this mean that the the throttle body needs to be replaced? It does have 165K miles on it. FYI, I do clean the throttle body regularly. Could the MAF sensor need cleaning?
