How to get gas out of tank?
How to get gas out of tank?
HI
as some of you peoples may have read, I need to replace the fuel pump in my 89T/A
Of course, I filled up the gas tank about 10 miles before the pump died.
So what is the best way to get the gas out of the tank. I dont have access to compressed air, or any siphon machines.

I could be way off here, but I heard they drill a hole and drain the gas, then patch the hole when they're done. Anyone, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong...
no, ive worked at shops, they usually have a tank with a large hose and a hand crank, they put the hose into the tank and tun the crank and out it comes.
if they drilled a hole, there would be sparks and it would blow up.

Joshua, I bought my hand pump at Checker Auto ($10 bucks or so), and is very easy to drain the tank. You'll need a few containers to put it in.
I bought these big 6.? gallon fuel rated jugs at Autozone that did the trick.
You can probabaly get it down to 5 or so gallons, and be ok, but that's still 30 pound moving around in there. I personaly like to get as much as I can out.
BTW: I also use the pump to siphon my automatic trans though the dipstick. Works like a charm.

Definately invest in a little hand pump. I bought one (a little plastic cheapo one) and use it all the time. You could also cut off a 4-feet peice of garden hose and get yourself a trash can. Shove the hose down the tank and Syphon it out. Probably end up with a mouth full of gas (not the best tasting stuff) but it'll work ...if you're one of those cheap backyard mechanic types.

I'm used to older cars but how about a big bucket and a gas can?? Just break open the fuel line, pop the gas cap and let the good times roll. Correct me if I'm wrong but the line should still be below the tank's waterline. Please don't use a drill, even if the tanks empty!! Fumes are just as bad. Good luck!!

just stick a hose in the tank and suck till gas comes out. once u get abit to come out it all should. just makes sure to spit and wash ur mouth out. it tastes pretty bad but it saves money.

I will say, don't use a vacuum cleaner. When I was about 6 years old, a kid up the street (about 15 years old) was syphoning gas out of a car with a hose for his lawn mower. He told me, "I don't ever want to see you try this. It's dangerous", as I watched him.
Years later, I heard that the same guy tried it with a vacuum cleaner and that's how he died. It's just wierd that he was warning me about the dangers of syphoning gas a long time ago and then he died that way.

If you haven't done so already, cut a garden hose about 4 foot long. Shove it in your tank untill you hit the bottom. Next take a wet hand towel (not dripping wet but fairly soaked) and wrap it around the inside of the filler neck and garden hose. Make sure that the seal is very solid air should not leak out of the rag. Then blow on the hose. You should hear the gas bubbling. Oh don't suck on the hose like someone else said unless you like drinking gas. Once the tank is pressurized, guess what gas starts coming out, make sure the hose coming out of the tank is aiming towards the ground at this point or the syphone won't take long to stop. It may take a few tries to perfect this but whatever you do don't light a match and make sure you have a big a** can around if the tank is full.
good luck
