hot wiring electric fan....
well id like to hot wire my electric fan, but i need to know which wire is the hot wire, and what exactly to do with it. im sure people on this board have done it, and i was wondering if they noticed any sort of difference after doing it. thanks
You mean wire a switch to your fan? In that case you need about six feet of wire. Splice a wire into the wire going to your passenger side head coolant temp sensor, should be green iirc. Run it under the brake booster into the car to a switch, and then the switch to a ground. Ground the wire to activate the fans.
If you mean wire it to run all the time you can just ground that green wire, but I wouldn't suggest it.

yah, I just did this to my car a couple weeks ago.
My car is an 89tbi 305.
there are 2 wires that come off the fan.
the wire that is all black is the negative, run that to the negative terminal on the battery.
the other black wire had a red strip in the middle, that is the hot wire. I dont know if all cars will have this red stripe, but mine did.
I ran the hot to a switch that connected to the battery. the wire went from the positive on the battery, to the power lead on the switch, and the hot from the fan wire went to the accesory on the switch.
be sure to use a high amp switch, I used a 20 amp.
I ran the wires through the grommet for the speedo cable.

rezinn, you say you dont recommend setting up the fan to where it'll always run along with the engine, why is that? my car has no problem overheating, but even though its the winter it gets up to 220 in seemingly no time. When the fans come on i notice an really quick drop in temp. Also, its only when the car seems to be sitting in a line, or at a light when it gets to 220, and id like for it to not get that hot that often. What are the ill-affects of hot wiring it?

Usually the reason for not wiring your fans to run all the time is because it will cause them to wear a lot faster. So unless you wanna replace your fans anytime soon it might not be such a hot idea.

This info is in Tech Central on the main page, or was anyways in the Tech Articles...
But you shouold be wiring to control the relay for the fan...not directly to the fan.
Simple way is to come off the Fan Switch in the passenger side head with a wire to a toggle switch, then from the other sode of the toggle to ground...this would bypass the FS and turn the fan on when you wanted to, and when you forget to turn it on, it would still work as normal.

Mine was wired direct when i bought my car.I have since wired it to a toggle switch because i found it took longer to warm up to opperating temp. with the fan running full blast. This might not matter to you because your alot further south than i am.I would caution you to use a fairly heavy gauge wire and a heavy duty toggle switch if you go that route though, the fan draws a lot of power.I melted one of those cheap plastic switches in no time.Learned a valuable lesson on that one!Play safe.

Your fan won't die any sooner if its wired to run all of the time. THATS JUST A FALSE STATEMENT WHOMEVER SAID IT WOULD. How much it runs only effects about 5% of its life span, there are alot other factors which cold kill it.
Mine is wired like this, the neg lead goes str8 to the ground next to the battery. The pos goes to str8 to the fan fuse.
