Converting from Carb to EFI questions.

Hi everyone, I would like to tap into your experience. I am in the planning stages of converting my 1987 formula from carb to EFI. I did a lot of research and have narrowed it down to the Holley Sniper.

My question is, when I remove the carb and its associated sensors, the ECM will be useless. What will I loose without the ECM. I know the trans lock-up is one, that I an fix. The cruise control will not work. I did see somewhere a fix grounding the black/white wire from the module, but I am unclear on the process.

How about my speedometer. I have the electronic trans sender. Will I loose the VSS, if so, what are my options.

I know there are some here who have done the conversion from carb to fuel injection. What were your problems and fixes.

Thanks in advance,

Louis

Re: Converting from Carb to EFI questions.

In addition to fuel mixture, the ECM controls spark advance, torque converter lockup, EVAP canister purge, EGR operation, fuel pump operation (if you have a booster pump in-tank), cruise control, and air injection port/divert valves,

Re: Converting from Carb to EFI questions.

there's some threads around on the cruise control,

you should be able to convert the small cap dist to receive timing input from the Holley (if that model has timing outputs). I have not done it yet for my FiTech but plan to sometime soon.

other than that, the old ECM will not be controlling anything once the conversion is done.

I pulled my tank and installed a Walbro 255 pump in place of the old helper pump. Used my existing fuel lines to the engine bay and adapted them for later OE style quick disconnects with the 'nylon' hose.

Hi Naf, thanks for replying. Yes, you can use the original distributor by removing the module and wiring the sensor to the Fitech input.
One of my biggest concerns is, will I loose my speedometer. I have the electronic type not cable. What are your thoughts on this?

And if you can direct me to the cruise control discussion, I would appreciate it. I have rotten luck with the search function on this forum,.

Thanks,

Louis

Re: Converting from Carb to EFI questions.

The VSS buffer is independent of the ECM. It should still function normally.
