Recommended sealant for water pump & bolts?

Hello all,

I'm finally going to do my water pump tomorrow, wondering what the recommended gasket sealant and thread sealant are?

Mike

don't think gasket sealant is needed if you have smooth surfaces to mate, otherwise black permatex - little dab will do ya. for threads, only needed if they go into water jackets, use permatex white thread seal

I've always used a light application of good old Permatex High Tack. Make sure to clean off all the old gasket material and sealer first.

For the bolts - best stuff I've ever found. Use it for ALL your plumbing needs.

I have used that on pipe threads, foe decades. In fact, my uncle was a Utility company Natural Gas Service Man, he was the one who told me about it.

I'll have to try it on bolts, into water jackets, some day.

Re: Recommended sealant for water pump & bolts?

NOT Indian Head. Whatever else, NOT that.

Teflon paste is the perfect right stuff for bolts. Permatex 200 (brown gooey gunk), or Ultra RTV, or Right Stuff, is good for the gaskets.

Those parts move around constantly. You need sealers that stay flexible forever, which Indian Head does NOT no matter whether your great grandpa used it on his Model A or not. You don't want regular RTV either, as it eventually tears and turns into little useless *****, especially on the threads.
