Spark Plug Wire Routing

Am I remembering this right? Didn't the stock V8 wires route under the exhaust manifolds in little clips that bolted to the block? I'd like to do this again, but am not sure where they bolted or what the clips were like. Any info would be great.

LT1 clips/covers would work, and are still available. 12132228. 12312229, 12495502

They're a bit of work to install, however.


If you take that approach, the heat shields would also be helpful, 12163646

Interesting, but those (12495502) appear to go above the exhaust manifold.

Yes the originals did in fact go below the exhaust.

No I SERIOUSLY DOUBT whether ANY of those original part #s will produce a physical product anymore. After all, the newest of these cars is an ANTIQUE; even the most highly sought-after ANTIQUES back in the day when I was starting out in this hobby (although they weren't really "antiques" by the legal definition, only by the hobbyist's) such as 55-6-7 Chevys, were IMPOSSIBLE to get that sort of thing for. Even at only 15 yrs old or less.

Whether you can buy any of the "original" parts is mostly irrelevant. Shouldn't be too dreadfully difficult to take what you CAN buy, here in 2020 that might be made out of something DURABLE and not crumble to dust the first time you LOOK AT IT like the 80s crap, and purpose it according to your intentions.

Can't begin to comment on the details of any of those part #s. Seems to me like mostly an argument about whether it's more meaningful to write about music or to dance about architecture. Raw unadulterated unvarnished BULLSPIT and a waste of perfectly good Internet bandwidth.

On Some V8's The Drivers Side Wires Ran Under The Exhaust Manifold And The Passengers Side Ran Over The Exhaust Manifold.

On my '83, the driver side wires run between the exhaust manifold outlet and the engine block with plastic separator clips. Passenger side wires run over the top of the exhaust manifold and rocker cover with plastic separator clips and a bracket that bolts to the exhaust manifold.
Of course my originals were trashed, but I found after market clips (similar, not 100% exact) at O'reilly Auto Parts. They can order them if not in stock. Ebay has that type of stuff as well. I think it's stupid how they ran the driver side wires. Maybe in the future, I can modify a passemger side bracket to mount on the driver side manifold and run them over the top on both sides...

FWIW, those part numbers came from a 2004 database of parts used to rebuild a 1994 LT1, and the numbers still seem to be valid (and available). And it's still a SBC block.

As I see it, the problem of running the plug wires over the top, is that heat rises. As in the heat from the exhaust manifolds or headers. Even if you have adequate clearance to the plug wires' boots, the wire itself is usually too close to intense heat, which rather quickly destroys the wire. Yes, I know there are heat sleeve tubes available, but I plan to run my wires underneath along the sides of the engine block. The factory brackets from my 95 GMC Sierra truck retain the wires nicely in this manner. But I don't have the engine in the car yet, so I can't say for sure whether they actually fit well or not, or if there any interference issues.

I just thought it was stupid how they ran one side over and the other side under...

I was wrong about the plug wires running under the manifolds on my 95 GMC truck. They run around the back of the valve cover retained in these cool brackets, and then along the lower side of the valve covers.





This is my 334 SBC that I plan to get back in my 84 TA......... someday. I hope these wire retainers work and don't interfere with the firewall.
