Tech / General EngineIs your car making a strange sound or won't start? Thinking of adding power with a new combination? Need other technical information or engine specific advice? Don't see another board for your problem? Post it here!
My family recently picked up a 1982 Camaro Z28 pace car edition (305 Crossfire Injection) and I have been trying to diagnose some issues with the evap system using this very helpful thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...l#&gid=1&pid=1
I have tested all the parts, and the only thing that seems broken is the purge solenoid (pictured below). According to the thread, which is for the same setup I have, The solenoid should be open (Allowing air to pass through) when no voltage is applied but closed when 12v is applied to it. Mine is open with no voltage but doesn't close or do anything when I put 12v directly to it. The replacement part shown in the thread (Standard Motor Products CP201) seems to no longer be available anywhere. Is there anyway to find a new replacement or is there any other solenoid that I can plug in or adapt to work from a different car? Any help would be much appreciated!

Rock Auto has this part, 1982 Chevrolet Camaro 5.0 under emissions, canister purge valve lists for around 30 bucks

Yeah I've looked there and that isn't the right part unfortunately. It says purge solenoid on the category under emissions but if you look at the pictures you can clearly see that's a totally different part than the one I posted pictures of. It's just a basic purge valve with no solenoid.
Looks like a egr solenoid would provide the same functionality. If that's just on/off with no vent then you could cap the vent port. Connector might need to be changed too. IIRC, tpi solenoids worked one way and tbi worked the other. Which one was which I don't recall. A Caddy 4.9L solenoid was the available replacement for the tpi one. I have no idea if either are available anymore but it maybe something worth looking into. Worse comes to worse, I may have a solenoid you can have but first I'd need to dig and find.

If you have an old solenoid that's working I'd be more than happy to buy it from you but I'll look into the other parts you mentioned and see what I can find available. Thanks for the info!

So upon doing some further reading, I think that the tpi/Cadillac 4.9 egr solenoid is normally open which matches my purge valve solenoid so I think ill probably pick one up and try to make that work by capping the vent port like you said. Even the form factor of the egr solenoid looks similar so hopefully it will be easy to mount. Rockauto carries the Cadillac 4.9 egr solenoid from a few companies so it seems like its readily available. Thanks again for the idea! I'll do a follow up post when I get one and try it out.
I used one on my egr a few years ago. I have a usa delco one if you run into problems, but I'd have to find it. You'll need the wiring pigtail too. The new one is metricpack I think, something like that, the old is weatherpack.

Rockauto has the wiring pigtail with connector as well for the caddy solenoid so I should be good but if im having trouble I might take you up on that AC Delco one. I will post again if I get it working or not. Thanks again!
Does GA require your Car to be Emissions Compliant?
I would do away with the Purge and Vent Valves if you are not required to keep them...
Install a Vented Fuel Tank Filler Cap (Gas Cap).
I swap those out for more modern Parts from a 4th-Gen.
You need the Pigtail as already stated.

The TPI version of the Purge Valve seems to still be available...
I would go that route.
You will need the Red Metri-Pack 150 Pigtail for the TPI version.
Where did you find the TPI purge valve? That sounds like a really good alternative. Is it normally open when not powered like my stock one?
Also, GA does not require emissions on the car at all because of its age so I really don't NEED to keep all the EVAP stuff but with the car being completely original and low miles I feel like keeping as stock as possible is where the value is. That said dealing with all the emissions junk so far has been a pain so I would definitely consider ditching it if the alternative doesn't cause any issues. I read on other forum threads people arguing about deleting the EVAP system or going to vented caps and it seemed like it could cause excessive gas fumes and also I couldn't really find where to get a vented cap for an 82 Camaro. If you have a good recommendation for a vented cap that's available that definitely works, I'll maybe try that.
Lastly, I'd love to know what parts you swap out to 4th gen parts and how well that works for you. That sounds like a killer idea. Thanks for all your help!

No need for a vented gas cap. Just use the Canadian vapor recovery system which is non-ECM and requires no purge solenoid.
That's what I'm doing...
'Had to buy a different vapor canister. 'Got a vacuum line diagram from one of the members here. The system is controlled by port vacuum instead of a solenoid. Of course this will probably throw a code on the ECM and cause the Check Engine light to come on.
I got rid of the ECM, so it's not an issue for me...

Knowing this post is a year old were you able to find a solution for replacing your purge solenoid?

No, Unfortunately, I have not found a stock replacement or figured out a solid workaround yet, but hopefully soon I'll have more time to investigate it again and I'll post here if I figure it out.
I bought replacements on eBay. Also, the valve to the canister should be replaced too. It’s $34.
If you have time could you post a picture or a link to the Ebay listing you bought them from? Putting that part number into Ebay doesn't bring up the right part either.
The top is 3 part numbers that interchange with part an Amazon has it but currently out of stock
it took 1 month for Amazon to get it for me
Thanks for posting this! That's awesome info. I went ahead and ordered the Amazon one you posted and hopefully I'll get it soon enough. I've waited this long without finding one so a month to ship wouldn't really bother me.
