Anyone enlarge the stock runner gaskets?

I ordered TPIS runner gaskets. Selected 2 day shipping. That was last week. They still haven't moved. This of course is holding me up. At this point I'd like to order the Felpro gaskets and open them up to meet the Edelbrock runners and lower. Have any of you had success with this? There are literally no other options. The Mr Gasket 146 is non existent. No one can tell you when they'll ship. So I'm kind of stuck.

Re: Anyone enlarge the stock runner gaskets?

I've done it in a pinch, since there's metal in the stock type gaskets, i used a cast iron bit on a air powered rotary tool.

Re: Anyone enlarge the stock runner gaskets?

I have to make custom runner gaskets for my intake and use MR Gasket 77B gasket sheets ($14.19 shipped). I can confirm it is the same gasket material used in the MR Gasket 146 gaskets.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/354434063687

I use a small X-Acto razor knife (a small breakaway blade utility knife doesn't work as well, but will work if you already have one) to cut the runner openings. If you're careful and go slowly you can make a clean cut, although it might take more than one pass around to cut all the way through. I've seen some cheap looking China made sets of round hole cutters that included a 45mm (1.77") punch for around $15 that MIGHT make things a little easier, but if you're not making a lot of gaskets it's probably not worth taking a chance that they would actually work.

The biggest problem for me when making the gaskets were cutting out the bolt holes. I ordered a relatively nice set of gasket making punches for $22 since I have to make custom gaskets for my intake and headers. However, if all you plan on making is one or two sets, eBay has a hollow punch set that looks like they would work OK for $7.75 shipped. I can tell you from experience, even if you can only get one set of runner gaskets out of them, it'll be worth the 8 bucks - lol

Anyway, thought I would share in case making your own gaskets (at $22 and your time) would be an option for you.

Re: Anyone enlarge the stock runner gaskets?

Great info. Thanks! I can get the 145 set. If it's the same material as the 77B I'll just open those up since there's no metal and the bolt holes and shape are already there.

We used to sell both the 145 and the 146 gaskets and the 145s use less gasket material (overall the gaskets are smaller, not just the runner openings) than the 146s. They might work out for you, but I'm not sure you could take them out all the way to 1.75", or if you could there might not be much material left. I can tell you the gaskets are fairly thick and it's going to be tricky for you cutting around the holes with the edges going to be that thin. If you try them, I'd bolt the gaskets to the runners and/or use some clamps to get the gasket in place and really tight against the runner and use a new razor knife blade and cut off the excess using the runner openings as a guide. That gasket material is too thick and the edges will be too thin to try and enlarge the openings freehand,

When making your own gaskets, you draw out all the gaskets on the material, then use the punch for all the bolt holes, then cut out the all the openings, and lastly you can use sharp shears to separate and finish off all the individual gaskets. However, the shears need to be really sharp, especially if your cutting close to the openings or bolt holes.

You can make your own gaskets faster and w/o any special tools, AND do the bolt holes with ease using a ball peen hammer. Lay the material over the flange and gently tap around the edges (internal and external, edges) of the flange...the flange edges and the hammer tapping will cut the gasket material. Flip the hammer over to the Ball side for the bolt holes and tap the center of where the bolt hole is...the ID edge of the hole and hammer pinching the material will cut out a real nice bolt hole in the material.

You don't have to hit it hard enough to cut the material all the way through, either. Just enough to cause a "perforated" effect, then tear out the pieces that need to go (runners, bolt holes, EGR hole, etc.).

A gasket like that needed for one side of the TPI should be able to be "banged" out in under 5 minutes.

Meh. I grabbed the Felpro and took a Dremel to it. Didn't have to do much. The runners are installed

Re: Anyone enlarge the stock runner gaskets?

Opened up some stock type gaskets to fit my SLP runners & ported base. Not that I need to at the time, still got the SLP paper gaskets in my gasket tote But I preferred the metal core stock type. Used a drum sander on my air grinder if I rem right, might of used a carbide burr but can't rem if i had to.

Re: Anyone enlarge the stock runner gaskets?

If it helps anyone, years ago I traced out the Mr. gasket 146 set on gasket paper and put it on the shelf. Not sure how I could create a digital pattern though.

Re: Anyone enlarge the stock runner gaskets?

Arizona Speed & Marine sells a nice set of oversized gaskets and they actually ship. I had to do a chargeback on TPIS last time I tried to order gaskets from them. I never got a response from multiple emails and phone calls so I called the credit card company. I hope you have better luck.
