Best Cam for Stock L98 TPI, wanted the crane 2032
Best Cam for Stock L98 TPI, wanted the crane 2032
Hey guys got a quick question, looking at getting my motor redone and was wondering what is a solid cam that you can run without any issues. I have the 87 L98 350 TPI to my knowledge everything is stock. I had a cam in mind the Cranes Cam 2032 P/N: 104224 but that's out of stock everywhere cause they went out of business, or so I have seen on the threads on here. I was wondering if there is another cam out there that's very similar that would work for me and what I have going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also apologies in advance I did attempt to look for the answer before posting this but was unable to find it.

How about https://www.compcams.com/xtreme-ener...oller-sbc.html
Out of stock too but only temporarily. And definitely not out of business.

That's NOT a good cam for TPI. Much better with a carb or other systems that don't rely on the "tuned" nature of TPI.
There are cams designed specifically with TPI in mind. These are some of the best of those, that doesn't require tuning, which is a major PITA for people without their own equipment for burning PROMs as we the process in the 80s. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-08-501-8 or https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cca-08-302-8 You can get more aggressive ones but then you run into the need for tuning, which if not satisfied, leaves you slower than you were when stock. They tend to require tuning in the later cars without a MAF but work well in the earlier ones like 87.

GM 94666492 is very close to the 2032 grind. I recently degreed one into a budget L31 I built. Do not let the low cost scare you. It is a step nose, steel roller cam.

Ok so I'm kinda new to this lol, would I have to change out any of my stock internals to run this cam like springs, retainers, etc.? Also looking for a bit of a change in the idle without having to burn a new prom.

For a stock TPI, might consider a ZZ4 cam. Stock-smooth idle (probably easily pass emissions), but a significant boost over stock.
