New no-start issue - 1991 Formula 5.7 auto transmission
As the title says, I have a 1991 Formula 5.7L Auto transmission. After doing some reading here, I am thinking ignition lock cylinder or relay. However, maybe someone can give some direction.
I have owned the car since September, It's mostly driven on the weekend, some evenings.
The car has cranked flawlessly since owning. One thing that I should mention, when I turn the key to start the engine, sometimes the key cylinder stays in that position. It DOES NOT continue to try to crank, however, the guages stay in what looks like "starting" position, such as TEMP guage maxed out. The radio does not come on either. When I turn the key back about 1/8 turn, everything works as expected. It's been this way since I have owned it.
Have not had any issues with the original key or the one I had cut at a local locksmith.
Regarding the driver area. I did replace the tilt pins, clock spring, and steering horn pad/airbag. I have replaced the brake light switch as well.
I was out driving this weekend, stopped for food, parked, shut the engine off, was inside the restaurant for about 10min. Came out, went to start car, nothing. No click, nothing. Lights on dash did not dim when turning key to crank. I did try putting trans into neutral thinking maybe neutral safety, same results, lights, no click.
Battery and radiator are new.
Besides hot outside and maybe a couple of u-turns, nothing out of the ordinary for this Saturday drive.
After about sitting for about 10 min, car cranked. Drove about 10 miles home, shut engine off. Was able to crank the car like 5 more times. Haven't had time to try again.
Advice? Any help is greatly appreciated.

So you’re saying the key cylinder stays in the crank position but isn’t cranking the engine over when stuck ?
