Yes, in my 85 TA, I gained a solid .2 in the 1/4 switching to a conical K&N filter. It was part of my free mods on my 89, it sounds a lot better also.

On a TPI car its not a good idea to run the open element on the throttl ebody, but to run it on the end of the induction hose where its away from heat, then purchase a heat shield to furthur sheield off the heat.

Thats how my setup is running now, with the supercharger.

Will running an open element like on my TBI, lessen the chances of my car passing a smog test. Will it effect the results in any way?

I'm sure you will pass a smog test just fine.

Try to use the edelbrock open element, it works good on tbi.

I ran one for a while one one of my older cars.

"free mods" are mods that typically cost under 20 bux, and are purely labor..

Things like air filter changes, heat shields, throttle body bypasses, stuff like that.

Generally they help a little, but not all that much.

You will not pass the smog check in CA if you have an open element air cleaner. You will pass everything but the visual, I know this for a fact. If you get an open element just make sure that you keep your stock set-up and just do a quick swap when its time for testing, that is what I will be doing. It is worth the hassle and it is only a 10 min job if that.

Ermm. no.. Most open element cleaners with the PVC hooked, like the edelbrock one i recommended are 50 state legal and carry a carb EO number.

The heat riser on the stock exhaust manifold and the vaccum line from the TBI needs to be hooked up to the stock air cleaner, that is the reason that he will fail the visual part of the test.
