I have an 89 RS 305 tbi, what can I do to get this thing as close to the speed of light as possible ( car is stock right now) also It is a 5 speed does any one think it would be better with a 700R4 in it or is that personal preference?

Car: 87 IROC
Engine: modded LB9
Transmission: Pro Built 700R4
8.5:1 compression 540BB with 2 atmospheres of intercooled boost running through it should get you a little closer

The easiest way is to go out and buy a new motor. Do you need emissions etc?

What kind of budget are you working with?

I'd say get headers and a cat-back, that will definately wake the car up, plus if down the road you decide to get a 350 they'll bolt up.

After exhaust, I would do the following,
TC, Gears, cam, head work.

Be sure if you get gears to match them to whatever cam you have or are getting, that way they're powerband is matched.
This is a start, but you'll need to give us more info on what you plan on doing with the car.

I agree with Mark Shields. Though if you do live in a smog free state man like me tare that crap out of there. It also wakens up the engine. but definatly exhaust will wake it up.
P.S. Don't get rid of your stick are you mad. If you do I may now someone whom will buy it.

No unfortunatly I don't live in a smog free state Ct. is pretty tight on emission control (but what they don't know won't hurt them) Im kinda new to owning a car with some HP so I want to find out what is best , as far as the 5 speed I wouldn't sell it and I have a 700R4 in a 86 K 1500 that I don't use so I thought it might be worth changing (after thinking about it I agree don't change it) My budget is wide open as long as it will be worth it , ie, I don't want to put alot of money into this car if I could get something that would be better suited I'm also not looking to build a top fuel car either just something that I could hammer around town in I am open for all ideas, also manufactuers names would help if any one has some that they have used and know that its a good product or what's not good thanks guys!

being that money is no object, i'd say a Fast burn 385 crate motor, with an S trim vortec S/C, a t-56 six speed with a dual friction clutch, a Moser 12 bolt rear end and a good set of slicks would take care of your needs pretty well. Then for the suspension work your gonna need click the ad banner at the top of the page that says "Spohn performance" and buy everything he makes for thirdgen f-body's.

man i love spending other peoples money.....

o.k., o.k., I thinck you guys are a little misled I mean i don't have a problem with spending the money I just was kinda wondering if I'm barking up the wrong tree with a 89 RS 305 Imean like should maybe I look for something else or is the RS I bought worth it it's in great condition utra clean and for the price I couldn't pass it up again I apprciate everyones input I just don't want to spend some money on this car if there is something else lurcking around the corner that maybe I should think about like if I was to look for a IROC 350 or a Z 350 and go to town on that

The only reason I would buy an IROC or Z28 would be so you could say I got an IROC. But if you're going to be able to buy a crate motor and everything else, I'd say stick with what you got.

I agree with Mark on that one. The IROCs also had different suspension set-ups, wheels etc. But if you have a solid car already you may as well just put in a killer motor and mod the rest of it to keep up.

Well, theres your first problem right there... DITCH THE TBI!

I would definatley keep the 5 speed. They usually have a slight advantage over autos (especially 700's). The autos like to eat up a good amount of horses.

No replacement for displacement.

Get a 350 or a 383 and then your T5 won't handle the power so you'll need to replace it with a T56 :hail:

i say if you've got money to spend, go with a fuel injected crate engine, it will be alot less of a headache then a carbed setup and get decent mileage as well. Definately you'll need a good exhaust system to go with your engine, and if you can afford it i'd swap out the 5 speed for a t56 or aftermarket trans before you blow it up cause you can get $400 for a working t5. I wouldnt upgrade the rear end until it blows, however, because the moser is pretty pricey and there are some people on here running stock rear ends well into pretty quick times.

If you want this thing to handle well, take a look over on the suspension board, you'll definately need a set of SFCs with that ammount of power, you should also look at getting tubular suspension members (lca, torque arm, panhard) to replace the stock stamped steel junk. 36mm/24mm swaybars with poly bushings, poly front control arm bushings, some decent shocks and struts, and a wonderbar and STB and you'll have a nice solid chassis that wil out handle any stock iroc or ws4, or any 4th gen.

actually,i think puttin a carb setup on a crate engine is a lot easier than fuel injection, just advance the timing a little, get it running and fiddle with the jets, and youre done, fuel injection you got all that computer/prom crap to mess with, and a lot more wiring-just my opinion.

Definety do something other than a TBI car. You will never get good numbers out of the factory system. In that respect, you are better off with a z28 or iroc with tpi. Especially since you need emissions. When they put in the vin the will know what you are supposed to have, and if there is a visual, you will fail really fast if he right induction is not there, even if the motor does blow clean

Just my two cents, but I have a 82 Z.,. it was 305 crossfire, biggest piece of garbage made.. for sure get your exhaust done first, gears can also wake up a 305. then when you have the cash, get a crate motor, you just cannot go wrong. Dont worry about the "NAMES" of camaros, such as IROC, Z-28, ETC.. I have a Z-28, but everything has been changed... engine, tranny, rear, etc. so I have a custom car, keep what you have, and make it into "YOUR CAR" customize it, make it unique, dont worry about the names on the cars. You will enjoy it alot more, trust me. Have fun! start out with the stuff that you can switch over to a new engine later, dont build up your 305 engine, just get the gears, exhaust, headers, etc for now, then get you a nice 350 or 385 motor , you will be lovin life, my 350 is rockin!

Hey now.. I personally like to refer to my car as "The Iroc".

Even though sometimes I refer to it as "*** damn piece of ****".

I know how you feel, I like to say I'm driving a brand new '86 IROC, cause just about everything is either rebuilt or new.
