Running at the track

My freind is getting new tires for his for his 95 TSi Talon, and wants to break them in at the track. Well anyways, I am guessing that his times will be in the 15.2's-15.5's because he has not practiced launching. The idea of power shifting had been unknown to him until me and another freind asked him if he had raced. Since my freind is going to run his car at the track, me and the other guys have decided to run also. My freind with the 90 Turbo Grand Prix I except to run 15.4-15.6's because his tranny is slipping a bit. Then the question comes down to me racing my freinds 94 Camaro V6 Sports Coupe. I have tried to get him to race me on the street from a stoplight to 45 or 50, but he always wusses out. He has gotten made fun of at school because he will not race a mini-van . I have a few questions, since the minivan does not have a tach, should I simply try and sense what it is at and go from that. Should I keep it in OD or shift if from 1>2>D>OD. And the most important do you guys think that I can take him? My freinds Camaro is bone stock, his tires are horrible, he is a horrible driver on top of that. He has never raced on the track or on the streets.

If your aerostar has the column mounted shifter, I would just leave it in drive, I would not try to shift it. I agree that you don't have much of a chance, but I've seener stranger things happen, especially if what you say is true about his car. Either way good luck man .

It has the shifter on the ground. I know I will get him off the line at least. I am going to take out the seats so that it will weight about 3300-3400 after I get rid of someother stuff. Even if I lose to him, I will make myself feel better by picking on the 20 sec Civic and 18 sec Cavaliers.

keep it in drive and punch it. With all those miles if you take it too high say bye to that tranny. I wouldn't risk it. Maybe if you had a tach... As for the Camaro, come on it's a Camaro. You drive a miv. Is the Camaro stick? If so maybe he'll miss a gear, but if it's auto he can't really mess anything but the launch up.

That seems to be the general sentiments of most ppl. I probally will not being going to the track anyways. My freinds just found out that you had to pay $30 to run during the test and tune. So they are debating if they really want to go or not. Myself, I am doubtful because the tranny on the car is not as strong as it was when it was new, and I do drive it hard sometimes, so I am thinking too much stress on tranny-->shot tranny-->my parents killing me-->no Brute Force.

Anyways I was wondering what a stock 86 L98 would run with a decent driver(I must be different than most people my age who think they are good drivers ) . And then what would it run with a homeade cai, full cat exhaust, new headers, and some underdrive pullies.

yeah high 14s stock, about 14.8 and with those mods you could be looking at 14.2 or less. That would be a nice car for you to get besides the miv. The 87 L98 were the worst ones. Least hp and such, but they were still faster then the 305s. The later the L98 the better. 91-92 had the most hp.

Dude, he doesn't even go the speed limit. I bet that he'll click off 50mph trap speeds at the track [if his mom would ever let him, lol]

Ohhhhh!!! As a little update, my freind with the 94 Sports Coupe, who shall be named, "Beaker". He had to give me a ride home from school today, and I asked him if his cars powerband was? And he then asked what it was, and I asked him he had ever ran at WOT, and he said no. He has not even run above 3/4 of the way down So now I am very sure that I could take him on the 1/4, the best thing is he does not really understand the concept of tachometer .

so his car is not stick? I guess you'll win if he doesn't even know how to floor it. Why is he even racing if he's never floored it?
