89 iroc vs 95 turbo eclipse
hey guys some punk at my school just bought 95 eclipse turbo with intercooler a blow of valve and some other junk i hat the thing and the kid there is a pool wich is around $200 and climing if i can beet him! we figure it will be some thing like 0-100 or so or maybe a 1/4 mile. I am runing a 89 iroc 5.7 tpi 700r4 3.73 posi, i got 3'' slp cat back with no cat but stock manifolds and y pipe, a airfoil, k&n filters throttle body hot water by pass modified MAF, 8.8mm wires and accel ignition it is realy quick i was neck and neck with a 94 trans am5.7 ls1 6spd . i have yet to run my car at the trake yet . i heard the the eclips is fast though what do you think i dond want to look like an idiot if i did

Ehh, I'd put my money on him possibly. Depends on what his mods really are, but with upped boost, a front mount intercooler, etc he would be pretty damn fast. You need to be more specific about what he really has. Especially if he has the AWD you are in trouble (GSX Eclipse is AWD, GST was front wheel drive). If he is FWD you may be able to get him if you launch really well. And again, it depends on exactly what mods he has, you're not very specific. Put it this way, with what you've hinted at for his mods he has a very real possibility of being a good bit quicker than your gears/catback L98...

no its not all wheel its just front but someone just told me it has an upgraded turbo im not sure what kind or anything. Isaw him lay down about 25 feet of rubber from a stop the other day wich is similar to my traction problem. its hard to go from a stop without spining up into second. I think i am confident that i will take him, i figured i would see what you gyes had to say first. ill get some good pis when we race! thanks for the imput

Ok, with an aftermarket larger turbo he will have you outgunned. But he will have traction problems with the FWD. Try to keep the race as short as you can, 1/4 mile at most, ideally only a 1/8 mile race. Because he will be gaining once he gets going. And you better practice till you get down the perfect launch, you don't launch good and he has you all the way around. He could still be out of tune, or may not be able to drive very well and such so who knows, but all things being equal he's faster than you, just going by what it sounds like he has... If you're off on his mods then it's up in the air. It's night and day difference with these things with the right mods...

ya thats what i was afraid of but it is his first five speed car and from what i hear from people who have driven with him he is real sloppy at shifting. I might want to hurry up and race him befor he gets better wich wont take long. What is your opinion on what it might take on top of the mods wich i already have? i think i got a good platform to work on. I am planning on getting some heders and a chip soon i am shoping around i just placed an ad on parts wanted for headers & y pipe.
sorry i am not spacific enough on his mods i am not sure what they are because i havnt realy got a chance to tae a look at it its been word of mouth you kow how that is. O yea for some reason he still has the stock exaust on it, it was the way it was when he bought it. I think it is a GS. but not sure. I SHOULD PROBLY LOOK INTO IT BEFOR I TAKE A CHANCE AT MAKING A FOOL OF MYSELF

just a few things I wanted to add
94 trans am didn't have the LS1 but the LT1... i think low 14's to high 13' stock
also as far as sloppy shifting. I am a very slopping shifter when just driving. something with the TPS is maladjusted so just tap gas and it surges real bad. also shifting gears is the same story.
an upgraded eclipse might be able to take you fairly easily if he has anything really done to it
but then again FWD is kinda a problem

My friend raced my one friend one night and he has a 97 eclipes turbo. it has upgraded turbo, hks bov, greddy boost controller, full hks exust, lowered, different pistons and he raced my friend with an 87 gta with 5.7 tpi, 700r4, 9 bolt (worn) posi rear with suposivly 3.73 gears.
the raced and my friend with the gta got beat. and the eclips is fwd and auto.
id watch out for that kid enless he learns how to shift now, becuz he might beat u. just make sure u heat ur tires up so u can get more traction and also learn how to launch. maybe find someone with a set of dragradials u can barrow for that race.

Just race him. If you get beat it's an excuse to do some more mods. No shame in loosing to any car, unless you miss shifts, stall it out, or launch a motor. Then I would be embarrassed. Where's Borne, MA. If you loose maybe someone else could show Eclipse guy the rear lights of a 3rd gen.

Plumma, New England Dragway opens on April 2nd. Tell this guy you'll race him up there. That should give you some time to get your car sorted out. New England Dyno and Tuning is having a Dyno day on March 22th. Bring your car there and get some baseline numbers on your car. After you find out what hp and torque #'s your car makes, get a pair of drag radials. Good luck and keep us posted.

The IROC has a 3.27 rearend. I know this because i am the previous owner. When i had the car it was mint then i sold it and the kid crashed it. Then the kid that wants to race the eclipse bought it from the junkyard bought it for $2000, and we did a quick temporary restoration on it untill the weather warms up. This is my member sn, but my buddy that owns the car now is just using my member name for now. The car is really a very nice IROC, and is the exception to the rule when it comes to most third-gen camaros. I originally bought it for $2800 with 71k miles.

So you are running 17 lbs of boost on a big16G with a stock exhaust?!? I'm surprised that you haven't melted your catalytic converter yet! You realize that with that level of boost changing from stock to a full 3-inch exhaust will probably give you about another 40 hp or so, right?

I can't believe that you are running that much boost with that turbo on a stock exhaust! Talk about a bottleneck! You've gotta get that changed ASAP!!!

Ok guys, I owned both cars in question. At the same time actually. I had a 1988 350 TPI Trans Am with 3:73 gears. And now I have a 1997 GST. Once my Big16G spools (around 3200) I spin like crazy. But an Iroc is going to lose pretty bad once I hit third. DSMs are cool but... $$$$$$$.
Hey boosted, you must get some fierce boost creep with that stock exhaust. I hope you at least have a 34mm wastgate flapper on that turbo. Check out www.dsmtalk.com if you haven't already. what a small world it is whaen you run into the kid you want to race. what are you import people doing on a real cars web page. oh yea so even if this eclipe turns out to be what it is said to be keep in mind that he paid about $5000 more for that ugly car. thats alot of sho and not much go that sounds nothing like a real. it looks like its about time to race and see what hapends. Oh yea and "boosted" or what ever you want to call yourself its mark jackson to me, i heard that you were afraid to do over 100mph the other day whats with that.

as for what import people are doing on a "real car" website?
what defines a real car? sure you can say having a v8 that would be a real car. but ok then what about those cars out there running v12 or v10 motors? so change it now to anything that is v8 or larger... I guess that means the v6 people then have no place on the board because well it's not an 8 cyl so it's not a real car. make this a little better.... a domestic is a real car right? then a lambo, ferarri, porsche, buggati and all the high end sports cars I guess are nothing. they are not a real car then by those standards. so what are you going to do then? make it so only cars running in the 12's are real cars? then YOU don't own a real car so we can't do that either, also that would include some imports being they can run 12's as well.
so honestly now that I said all that what is your def of a "real car"
so he paid $5000 more for his car. if you want to take price into account like that you have no right to have any respect for the ,vette (z06 or coupe), or the 4th gen camaro/firebirds being that they cost a lot more then that.

I would call that a lot more go then you have.... A LOT MORE GO. to me it sounds as though he has more of a "real car" then you do. at least if he is telling the truth

and being afraid to do over 85 in an import??? sure if it is a stock beater from 79 I could understand... domestic or import... but if you really are afraid to do over 85 just b/c it is an import you need to get some skills at driving.

By the way, all DSMs were built in Normal, Illinois, and they were marketed under both domestic and import brand names.

i just want everyone to know that everything that has been written in this thread under my member name was not by me, a buddy of mine has been using the my name. I am the previous owner of this IROC but he ownes is know. If anyone has questions about the car i'm all ears. For the record personally i favor domestics(chevy&dodge) but if someone wants to modify an import because they realize most domestics are fast from the factory so be it. I just dont like when someone buys a 4-cylinder civic and tints the windows, puts some wheels and exaust on it and thinks they have a ferarri.

I worked on these things, they scream off the show room floor.. NEW .. If I were to race myself in a 95 Eclipse agaist my Formula it would be a really close race. I think I'd have to run the eclipse down actually and since I've never gone bulistik in one I have no idea how the run after WOT in third gear red line. This is a new one now...

boosted95gst if you know I could take your input as well.... oh yeah apexi N1 on a rx7 sound sweet as hell...sure it would sound good on a eclipse...

90formula- The eclipse is great in the redline. keeps pulling until you shift. (if you have an upgraded turbo) Especially in third. It's the best gear in my car. By the way, sounds like you've got a nice car man.

The Big16G is a good mid-size street turbo that can support upwards of 350 whp (someone correct me if I'm wrong here, my numbers might be off). It's a direct bolt-on for 1st gen DSMs and can be installed with a few tweaks to 2nd gens. A comparison of this turbo with some other popular DSM turbos can be found here:

hey look sorry if i was a little out of line and my definition of a real car is not what you made it out to be i only give the kid a hard time because he gives me a hard time it is understood betwwen us. its not how it sounds he is actually a friend of mine i go to schol with him. I am not a big fan of all those kids like my budy already said who put on loud exaust rims tinted windows a loud system and call it fast steet machine. None of this stuff realy means much to me i was brought up as a mopar man anyway i just recently found my liking for camaros. I already own a 57 dodge 354 hemi car and a 64 dodge polara 426 ci. that is what i am realy interested in . Ya maybe his eclips is faster than my car and i dont realy have a problem with that. no one realy nose if his car realy has any of that aftermarket stuff on it its been said it doesnt but who knows. sorry if i came of as a punk but im not im a regular guy who likes cars just like all of you i just perfer some thing more than others but all the power to ya if you want to build up something you like.
