trans am vs. viper

This isn't really third gen related, but tomorrow night me and my friend are going to the track. My friend has a fairly highly modded LS1 (ported LS6 heads, big cam) well anyway, he wants to run a viper tomorrow in his trans am. He went two weeks ago and ran a 12.7 at 118mph, but this time he hopes to have some slicks. Should he be able to take the viper. It's a 99 GTS.

With slicks he just might have a chance if he can hook up. If he's running high 12's on street tires slicks might just do it.

A $30,000.00 car Vs. a $80,000.00 car. It's hard to beat F-body/Y-body for $$$ per performance ratio.

If he's trapping 118 he should be in the mid to high 11's man....and yes...you can own a viper from a stop with those trap speeds...I know from personal experience

I would pay good money to see this race. Video tape it PLEASE!!
That would be great. I saw a viper roll smoke out from its rear going to autozone today.
One hell of a race.

he only ran a 12.7 with a cam and ported LS6 heads!?!?!? I'd say your friend needs to learn how to drive cause that is pathetic, he should be a full second faster than what he pulled off. I know people running 12.7 with lid and exhaust with their LS1...

Traction is pretty good with the LS1 based cars. At least with the TCS on.

I know I have done burnouts in a couple of LS1's.

The '98 GTS does a 12.2 at 119...on street tires...If it's modded or even has slicks...expect it to be in the mid 11's. I would put my money on the viper, but as someone else said, it will probably come down to the driver

i'd put my money on the Camaro driver. 20k car drivers tend to beat on their cars alot more than guys with 80k cars. this equates to being a better driver.

if both drivers are good and know how to launch it will be a good race. i'd have to say viper by a snake's skin

That's true...But ususally the one's who don't push their car don't end up at the drag strip. My bro drives a Z06 and he drives it like he stole it

Most people who own Z06's and Vipers don't race 20K cars because it wouldn't be a race at all...Until they run into a modded one of course

If you ever get the chance to drive a Viper, take it.
I drove a friends 02 GTS and it was really sweet.

It's a toss up on who'll win though since we don't know anything about the Viper.
Around my area, stock Vipers stand no chance against many of the cars in my circle of friends, including a certain Honda Civic Si that is putting 503hp to the wheels.

my total investment is less than 15K and I can mop up on a lightly modded Z06

i don't want no one to think i'm busting on cheaper cars. my vette total investment was 15k also but it's only stock and my Z/28 is 5k total and ran mid 13's BUT what would you Rather have a Honda Civic SI or a Viper?

i'd trade both my vette and my Z for a Viper :lala:

I'd rather drive the Viper, but too see the look on a viper owners face when he gets torn up by a Civic would be priceless.

You would trade your car for a Viper? You people kill me. If you don't give a **** about your car, don't get it or mod it in the first place. Vipers, like anything have their problems as well. But hey, let's all sell out just because this 80k car is somewhat faster. Let's jump blindly into an unfamiliar car just because it's popular.

Not me. When I get done with any of my many projects, a Viper owner can dream about what I have, what I've accomplished. And when he's on his 3rd Viper and my car has hit 150k and is still running strong...he can trade me his status car and some cash and I'll teach him what he did wrong.

if someone was offering to give me either a civic or a viper, of course I'd take the viper, cause vipers are nice cars and civics are econobox **** and I hate Hondas. would I trade my car for a viper? not a chance, it already could kick a vipers *** and so what if you could make a viper faster, you couldn't do it for anything the average working guy (much less broke college kid) could afford.

yeah i would trade'em but would i buy a viper for 80k? no. i'd like to have one and one day i just may. all i'm saying is if you could afford one even if it was slower wouldn't you want it?

sheez lay off the crack! you never had dreams when you were a kid playing with your matchbox cars in the sand box? obviously for you you did buy your car for somekind of a status marker. if not you wouldn't of bought it, you would of bought a hynduai! we all bought our cars for some kind of status marker. American V-8 power, can be easily modded, can take turns, can still turn heads, and still can get good looking puntang cause they look good.

so don't tell me if someone said ok i'd trade you this ferrari for your 3rd Gen you wouldn't take it even if it was for a day, week, month, year, or forever.

Don't get bent

I do what I do because it's what I want to do. I do NOTHING for prestigue. Literally NOTHING. That's like selling yourself and I don't do it.

You should really know what kind of cars I have before you accuse ME of that. You really should.

I don't dislike Vipers. But if you have a v8 Iron Block F-Body, you have a better car. Don't just ogle and droolat the pictures, read the fine print. Vipers don't last long and they are overpriced and overrated. If you ARE after status, you are cheating yourself. You are being a slave to the public opinion. And maybe it's just because I'm so different, but that would horrify me.

Don't get irrate. I am only stating my opinion, not bashing you.

if i could afford a viper i would buy one. in a year or 2 i will be able to afford one but right now i'm looking for a sweet callaway twin turbo vette. i would also keep my other cars. i own several V-8 cars so no need to be so defensive about what others say.

You ever think that maybe someone might NOT be buying a Viper for prestige but instead because THEY THEMSELVES like the Viper? I don't give a rats *** if other people like my car as long as I like it. I happen to love the way the viper looks and would gladly own one. Would it be my only car? Hell no, I'd have an F Body at home too, and it would probably be quicker than the viper. And what's with this they don't last long propaganda? Maybe they don't, I don't know. But any car won't last very long if the owner doesn't take care of it.

Good for you, Joe...but I think you took Traveler's post wrong. I, myself, do not believe that every single person that gets a Viper-- gets it for prestigue. But some do, and that's a shame...

By the way, I wouldn't trade any car I have for a Viper. Reason being...vehicles are non-living possessions. My vehicles have sentimental attachment to them. Some more than others.

Here's a funny situation: Say there is a new meant condition Viper for 50k and a built up 3rd gen camaro that is just as fast and is perfect in nearly every way according to me. For 10k. Assuming we all have that much money free--Which would I buy? Which would you buy?

My answer: The Viper. Then I would drive it for a day or two, sell it for more, and buy the Camaro and pocket the 40k+.

radical turbocharging... It's possible, but definitely not common by any means.

First of all, almost anyone can build a bad a$$ engine...It takes money, and a lot of sweat of course if you do it yourself. So ovibiously a 3rd gen camaro or fireturd with 10K invested in the engine would stand a good chance on beating a viper or Z06, but probably not on a roll on though, and definitely not on a curvey road. I love my '91 Camaro, I wish I had the money right now to get a better engien in there, but it can't be compared to a Viper or Z06 no matter how much money I invest...Those who have drivin them will understand

And by the way...80K will you get a BRAND new viper..50K will get you a used 2000 GTS...$35,000 will get you a used '01 Z06...Not a whole lot in the price differance now...

Sorry for such a long post, but check out some of the cars on z06vette.com and you'll see what I mean.

That's not a long post...you should read some of mine...

Anyway, as I always say, to each his own. As I said, I wouldn't trade any vehicle I have for a Viper OR Z06. For many reasons. I won't go into detail, because it may offend some people. But to each his own. Well, that's my own.

But to answer the original question...I don't know which will win. I like saying things that are certain. And I'm not certain. Which do I hope will win? The Trans Am. That's my pick.

Sorry, he raced him a few fridays ago...believe it or not my friend won quite handily with an 11.8 to an 12.2 in the viper. The viper was pretty much stock I think, I didn't get a chance to actually go to the track but I saw the slip. The viper only trapped 118 to my friends 122. Kinda scary to think putting 3000 into an LS1 can make it take down vipers....just wish I could afford one.

Congrats to your friend, I'm sure it's a good feeling to get a viper kill under your belt

Did the viper end up running slicks? It doesn't sound like it...People in the z06 club's are getting high 11's just with a stock '01 Z06 and factory tires. Same for the Vipers. Sadly, most people just don't know how to drive em!
