me vs. 305 iroc
a kid i know at school has an 89 or 90 305 iroc, thinks it is just ***'s gift to cars. anyway he thinks he can take my 350 iroc w/ a few mods. now i know that if his car is stock i wouldnt have a problem with him. but he wants to put down 200 bucks on it.
so my question is what is the extent of the modding he would have to have to beat me. so that when i see excatly what hes got i can decide if i want to put any money on it.
my specs:
89 350 tpi iroc 90k mi.
very recently rebuilt 700r4 w/ transgo shiftkit (less then 100 mi on tranny)
gutted airboxes w/ K&N's
flowmaster 80 series cat-back
hypertech chip

Well if his 305 tpi is stock, then you have nothing to worry about, becuz my friend raced a 305 iroc, in his 305 tbi w/ nothing but a 14" x 3" open element and a 3" Flowmaster catback exhaust and beat it by about 2-2 1/2 cars, so your car is an easy mid to high 14 sec car stock, so I wouldn't worry about it unless he has some serious mods done to his 305.

Though it makes you wonder why someone would put down 200 bucks for almost a sure defeat race. Either he really doesnt know what hes dealing with, or he has something up his sleeve.

If his car is a '90 5 speed its gonna be close. THe 5 speed cars were rated at 230 hp andI believe they got G92 performance rear(3.42) and dual cats. So these cars in stock form are very close. There are alot of little things he could of done to make up the extra hp. Also things to consider are options. Is his car fully loaded with T topss or is it a stripper IROC Z? Does your car have T's?Get more details and we can give you a better Idea. Of course its all going to boil down to driver ability in this one unless he's got some wicked mods like heads and cam.

A 5spd 305 TPI car from those years would need very very little to run with/beat you. 3.42s and the 5spd with very similar power put them very near your car stock, hell, if you don't have a particularly good running 350 it wouldn't be unheard of for the 305 TPI 5spd to beat you stock vs stock. Do you have dual cats/3.27 gears or single cat/2.77s? that will make a big difference.
Doesn't appear you have much at all in the way of mods so he indeed will not need much to hang with or take you, if it's the 5spd TPI car... Figure out which tranny setup he's got, then mods, then come back and post the info and it'll be easy to decide if you should bet him or not...
If it's a 305 TPI auto it would take a decent amount of mods to hang, they got a weak cam, crappy gears, worse exhaust etc vs the 5spd TPIs for those years...

He'd only need....
The bottle, he'd have you beat. Go pick up a bottle for yourself, never hurts to have insurance when you run for money.

the thing is i live in a small town and our high school is pretty small (~900 total students) and everyone knows everyone else, and their cars. everyone i have talked to says he doesnt have **** and i should win. and being that i live in decatur, IN (LPE ring a bell?) there is alot of nice camaros in the school parking lot most of which are 3rd gens and lt1 4th gens. in fact one of my best friends is the step-son of grham behen, the led engineer at LPE, another friend of mine is the son of Tom Cress the man in charge at LPE since John's unfortunate accident and passing.

as to give you an idea as to what my car is capable of: ran a friend of mine with a 93 lt1 at the local track, i took him off the line but he ended up beating me by about 3/4 of a car length.
also this kids car is an auto

the 305 tpi against the 350 tpi, well the 305 isnt ALL that much slower than the 350 tpi, i mean hell both are slow stock, it doesnt take much for a 305 tpi to beat a 350, hell for a couple hundred bucks i could take a 305 tpi and beat a stock 350 tpi, i mean i take the 350 tpi's and i have exhaust, a fresh rebuild, and free mods, rebuilt tranny, stall converter, slight mods like that,

ight, heres the deal
his car is bone stock w/ absolutely zero aftermarket parts, i just found out who sold him the car, come to find out he bought it off a guy i work with.
also, he backed out on the money, my guess is that he just wanted to sound like a badass by saying he wanted to put some money down, expecting me to back out. well, when i didn't he did...lmfao.
now he just wants to run for ****s and giggles...we'll see if he even shows up for that

Sounds like he has been hanging around some of Uncle Ben's finest. When you don't back down they always back out.

i saw his car last night at taco bell so me and buddy went in there to talk to him, see what the deal was. there wasnt gonna be any racing this weekend because it snowed like 2" yesterday.
anyway, we get to talking and its obvious he knows nothing about his car. he even went as far as to say: "yeah these iroc motors were the best chevy ever put out" looks at my friend, "i bet he smokes your camaro" (he has a modded lt1 that runs 13.3's)
(not the same friend w/ an lt1 i reffered to in an earlyer post.)
at that point i lost it. i could not contain myself any longer.
finally i ask if i can see under the hood. we go out there and he pops the hood, from appearaces it looks completely stock, i ask him if anything has been done to the engine "yeah, the guy i bought it off of had recently replaced the starter." we were literally rolling around in the snow laughing
so as soon as it drys up around here we are gonna race, ill let you know how it goes
