Lined up with an L98 on the way home..
Sucks I can only post race stories with thirdgens in them
My car, as it sits, is damn near stock (Hurry, UPS man, HURRY!!). '97 Z28, underrated at 285 hp (closer to 305), with a Magnaflow muffler on the stock pipes (2.75" haha). T-56 tranny, stock 3.42 posi rear. Street tires (245/50/16 Z-rated Kumhos).
I saw a red IROC cruising down the street as I exited the freeway. I turned right and followed him. We caught a light and he tossed a rev. Sounded like Flowmasters, no mistaking that horrible sound. I pushed in the clutch and tossed one back. The cross street was still red, and we sat waiting. I listened for a lope or other tell tale sign of mods, but heard none.
The cross streets turned yellow, and I raised my RPMs to about 3500, getting ready to slip the clutch and launch my beastie. The perpendicular lights turned red, and ours turned green. I started slipping the clutch, felt the rear tires break loose, and FELT THE GAS PEDAL PUSH BACK UP AGAINST MY FOOT!
I FORGOT TO DISABLE TRACTION CONTROL!!

My car bogged hard, I smacked off the ARS button causing the idiot light to illuminate on my dash informing me of my decision. I smashed the gas and let out the clutch and my car regained composure. I checked to see where he was in relation to me, I was at his rear quarter. I speed shifted to second, tires barked (no powershifting with the stock 55k mile clutch) and I gained a foot. Top of second came around and I was at his front quarter - shift to third, tires barked again and I pulled in front (him at my front quarter) and had to let off due to traffic. We were doing about 70-80.
We slowed down to about 20 MPH, I pushed in the clutch, tapped the gas to rev match and pulled her into first. We waited for traffic to clear and we went again from about 25 on my third honk. I matted the loud pedal, my tires chirped hard and grabbed. I jumped a few feet instantly. "Screw this," I said, and powershifted the living **** out of second gear. The rear end swung to the right a tad with the shift then pulled back into line. By the top of second he was half a car length back, by the middle of third he was a a car and a half back there. By the time I hit my shift point in third it was time to shut down, with him more than 2 cars behind me, probably closer to three.
We caught the next light, it turned green almost immediately, and I got the best launch I've ever had on street tires. I slipped out the clutch from about 3500, tires spun twice or thrice then hooked. He spun a tad then hooked. I jumped a foot and we hung even through first, with me inching slightly towards the top, then I powershifted second and started puuuuulling. Unfortunatly I was cut short by the next light and had to let off.
We pulled up to the next light and he told me he had an L98 with headers back exhaust, 3.42 gears, high flow intake base and runners with a ported plenum and all the free stuff. I told him all I had was a muffler, and he seemed a little put out. He said his best was 13.9@99, I have yet to run my beastie. We complimented each other's rides, and turned seperate directions.
He had a very nice IROC, red with gold IROC-Z emblems, very very clean.

good kill. i think im allowed to say that, even tho its basically my car that you're killing. but its always good to have stiff competition to make it where you actually have to see how good you can drive.

Good kill! That traction control take off was funny but quick thinking got you some of your cool points back.
Man I tell yea when I finish wiring in my 950 commander in my IROC and get it tuned I'm going to avenge every Iroc you kill by urban hunting every LT1 I see.

most LT1s, it seems like, are owned by idiot kids that think a bigger MAF and a bigger TB are going to give them 30 hp.

Good race between two awesome cars. Nice kill! I also like how clear and detailed your story was. There should be more threads like this one.

I had a similar run against a 86-87 L98 Vette awhile back when all I had was a cold air kit and my magnaflow catback on my 94 Z (a4). Pretty nice sounding vette w/ some exhaust mods. Pulled on him a little in first and then started eating him up pretty good in 2nd.
Darn LT1 bastards, picking on L98s, lol.
I want to run a stock LS1 and see how I stack up now w/ headers and the baseline custom tune I just flashed in last week.
Got any more pics of your ride w/ the grandsport hashes and the silver Z28 overlays? I was thinking about getting that exact setup for mine too (mine is Patriot red ie maroon however). Trying to decide if it would look good on that color. You get those from Brent Franker?

nice run man... for some reason i thought u had a trans am...
anyway i still waitin on my chance to run a LT1 car... i think i would do well against one but maybe not... i only trap 100mph and thats bout where that kid is in his iroc. seems like alot of L98's need full TPI bolt ons and stuff to hit near 100mph.. but i'm there with headers catback and a stall? go figure.

Alot of these cars have been maintained differently through their lives, some will naturally be a little quicker. You've got a good running car for sure. You'd hang close to a stock 2.73 A4 car I think. M6 cars are a little quicker with a good driver, they have better gears (3.42s) and less drivetrain loss. An M6 car can see 102 trap speeds bone stock. A4s typically see 100ish. My 3.23 geared T/A ran a 100.5 with just a catback. Once modded they both have equal potential of course.
