231 Vs 305?
A guy I work with wants to race on Friday....not sure if I want to do it.
ME:
2001 Camaro, 3.8L V6, 5 speed, 3.23 torsen rear, Hooker 2" Y-pipe (the factory exhaust sucks on 3rd/4th gens), 2 1/2" aft-cat exhaust, Flowmaster 80 series, with dual outlets. GMS airbox, K&N filter.
Best time slip to date: 15.68 @90mph, 2.11 60', .131 R/T.
HIM:
1983 Z/28, 180K L69, T5, Emisson Control/ECM deleted, Edlebrock 600, Edlebrock Performer manifold, AC delete box, 3.73 posi rear, Hooker Aerochamber, with 2 1/2" dual outlets, Some generic brand of shorty headers (he doesn't know either, car came with em..)
No timeslip to boot.
How badly am I gonna get beaten?

Re: 231 Vs 305?
Couldn't find it on the RPO sheet anywhere....so I guess that's a "no" to being a Y87 car.
Do you really think it'll be that close?
I'm not sure how much better a driver I am than him......hmm...I think I'll do it..I'll post back with the results.

Re: 231 Vs 305?
well, the results are in:
I BARELY beat him....I beat him out of the hole and through the top of first, he started pulling on me in second, and was about 1/2 a car length ahead all the way until about 80-90mph....then I started to slowly pull ahead...I backed off the throttle at 110mph and his nose was parallel with my driver door.
it was indeed a drivers race. I think if he'd hooked before I did, I couldn't have made up the slack, or it would have been a tie. neither of us missed a shift, he said he lost a bit of traction out of the hole and from 1st to 2nd also. I blame it on him having more low end torque than me and his gearing.
I'd love to do it again...this time at a track!
If the weather permits the weekend after next, its on!

Sounds about right. I wonder what kind of tires, or at the least the condition his tires are in. Makes all the difference in the world. Right now my car is traction limited due to running only 17x8s, which apparently even with Pirelli PZero Neros doesn't put up much of a fight against 460+ TQ.

Re: 231 Vs 305?
I'd say you got pretty lucky that his car is either out of tune or just tired from being old. I had less mods than that and ran a 13.89 back in '87 with my 84 HO 5spd. And yours should be running a little better than it does. We had a couple of the 3.8 cars in the 14's around here.
But it sounds like you guys had a great race. Always pretty cool when it just fenders and doors going thru the gears

I dunno if elevation or climate would factor into the tune of my car, would but where I live is about 60ft above sea level....
I can't speak about how well tuned Matt's (guy I raced) Camaro was.
We've been S---talking each other this week (all in fun, of course), he's itching for a rematch.

Both times sound about right. Come on guys, 180k on a 305 is pretty darn worn out, it is certainly not going to be running like new times. And a stock 3.8 is not a 14 second car by a long shot. Sounds like a good run.

Runs like a champ does not equal every bit of power as day one from the factory. Point is it sounds like they are getting reasonable results for real world driving and they were pretty well matched.

Dream on. I'll openly admit, I'm a novice drag racer at best, but even on an mostly stock N/A, 4th gen 3.8L F-body, you'll never be kissing 14's without a less than a .030 R/T, and a less than 2.00 60'...which as I've discovered without a chip/TB and cam, is damn near impossible on street tires in the most ideal conditions.
maybe I'm being an A-- here, but if I can get my ET down by 2 tenths, on this car, I'll be thrilled. To me that's impressive improvement.

Re: 231 Vs 305?
Reaction time is irrelevent.
I ran a 15.67 @ 89.88 MPH with a 2.35s 60' in my '97 RS. It had a T-5, 3.23 open rear, 17x9's with 275/40/17's, RKSport headers, high flow cat and a Flomaster 3" Exhaust.
14's should be do-able with a good launch and a 3.42 rear (Y87). I'm skeptical it could be done on street tires though.

Re: 231 Vs 305?
I'm not sure 3.42's would make THAT much of a difference. DR's or Slicks...definately. The 3.42's would maybe raise your 60' by a tenth or two if you hook right away.
I used to launch pretty low, but I could never trap anything better than high, high 15's or 16's. I've learned to launch about 500-700rpm higher.
at the trap, I've either just shifted into 4th or about to as I cross the line (depends on how much I spin from out of the hole).

Re: 231 Vs 305?
I always just rode it out in 3rd through the quarter in that car... never hit the rev limiter (probably a matter of tires). If you want some nice gains in that V6, I'd suggest grabbing a "VS" camshaft from ZZPerformance.com, I dropped one into that car and pulled ~210 RWHp on the dyno with the other mods I listed. I never got to run it at the track after that mod though
it was pretty mean for a N/A 3.8L.

Re: 231 Vs 305?
until I get my 3rd gen rolling again, I can't afford to have my 4th gen down, because its my only car.
probably keep the stocker cam in it...its just the daily driver workhorse. I'd rather have it be a moderately fast car, that gets relatively decent mileage, and is fairly reliable.
I'd rather throw money/time/mods at the 3rd gen. That one's just for go-fast fun.

I sold it to my dad and he's put about 12k miles on it and I had about 5k on the cam at that point... still reliable as hell, they're definitely awesome engines. Car has 152k on it now.But yeah I know what you mean... one project car at a time.

You realize R/T has nothing to do with your overall time right? There's people out there with the 3800 cars that are hitting high 14's.

I dunno man. My L03/Auto 2.73s RS ran a 15.7 with over 200K. That can't be too much slower, if any, than what it was capable of in 91.
