Can I beat a AWD 4cyl turbo Talon?

This kid in my town has got an older-style Eagle Talon, stock. It has AWD and the 4cyl turbo and a 5-speed. What did these things put out for power? Could I take him in a race? Thanks!

Our cars run same times, and I raced a AWD Eclipse 3 years ago + a LT1 car with heavy mods (3 way race). Light turns green and before we even let off the clutch the little ***** is out 2 car lengths on us - it shot out like a rocket, trying to catch up I ease off the clutch and spin a little, the LT1 smokes the tires and is left sitting at the light. I reel in the ***** in top of second gear and pass him in third, only to get smoked by the LT1 car on the top-end. Yea you should be able to beat him.

RR, you should have no trouble smoking that talon. The AWD modles came stock with a close ratio 5speed that produces high 250ish hp and squat tq thats why they use the close ratio gearbox. From a stop you will blow him away.
Just dont try to race him crusing at 40mph not saying you would loose but he would keep up with you very well.

Sorry Super-Sport-Chevy, you have it backwards.

AWD Talons and Eclipses have tremendous traction off the line and the gearing really helps put down the power. All other things being equal, expect to lose in a short race.

However, if you run longer/farther, the weight and parasitic losses of the AWD system will eventually catch up with the car, so an F-Body - again, all other things being equal - will have a chance to pass the Talon/Eclipse.

However, it won't be a gimme either. Those 1st gen Talons have larger turbos which pump more at higher RPMs. The 2nd gens, like my car, have smaller turbos which is great at low end but starts to run out of breath at higher RPMs.

Good luck!

I thought Talons had 210 hp - not 250ish.

Here is a good site for info on these cars: http://www.dsm.org/

My friend have a 95 Tsi AWD with a Gready ajustable blow off valve and HKS exhaust. These cars have a lot of traction on the start. When I race with him, he always take 2 or 3 car lenght on the start. I only come close to him in my 2nd speed. When the 3rd shift he is in my door and after that it's bye bye.

To anser to your question, yes you could beat him. Your mods looks similar to mines. But watch out not smoke your tires on the start. Do a good burnout before the race, that will help a lot for the grip. This should be a good race for a 4 bangers.

AWD Tsi are great cars. They pull realy hard with a little boost upgrade. I'm not a *****, but I respect these cars. They can make easily 300 horses with some littles mods.

UHmmm Umnnn.

True to a point. They have close ratio 5speeds and their deadly in the 40-90 mph range. Boost dosent do squat untile you keep it in the 4grand+ range thats why they gave these cars the close ratio gearbox to get them there quicker, Lets say that you are lined up with the talon and he's got it held at 4000rpm for the launch, he's in the boost range and the second he drops gear bang the car takes off and has to rebuild boost. The boost he built up is almost all lost as soon as the clutch is released plus the fact that he has to shift at 15/20 mph to second and rebuild boost. the fbody will be going strong and not need to shift until 30 or so. Its kinda hard for me to explain, my friend had a awd stealth with the same setup, fun car to drive but when we raced I always won and one time we swaped cars and he won in my camaro.

Buck Mustard your right I was fairly sure it was into the 210/220 range but to play it safe I claimed 250ish.

SSC,

True to a degree, except that when a AWD Talon shifts at 6000-6500 rpms, that drops revs down to 4000-4500 rpms for the next gear, which is prime boost making engine speed. In that range, full boost is nearly instantaneous.

Anyway, there are a lot of variables here, like driver skill, weather, road conditions, etc....

No flames here either. Just sharing opinions and knowledge. Actually, I'm helping a friend with his 87 IROC and I would love to drive his car on the track. In my AWD car, can't steer with the throttle, but obviously in a f-body you can. One day, I'll convince him....

RoadRocket L98 - just go ahead and race him - but do it SAFELY!!!! What have you got to lose....

Good luck!

Two hundred hp in the Talon and probably 200 torque. Which means at high speeds he aint got enough to outrun the formula if the formula runs right.

I just raced against a mits. eclipse and won. Off the line he had me. I spun for a second and by the time I had gotten traction he had about half a length on me. when I shifted into 2nd I lost a little ground but by 3500 RPM in 2nd I was reelin him in fast and by the top of 3rd 4000 rpm I was past him and shifted into 4th just increased the lengths. bye the way I have a 89 RS with a 5 speed manual

Maybe i can help here. In Feb of this year, it came down to buying either a '91 mitsu GSX (same thing as a talon) 5spd or an 88 305/auto SC. I'm posting on a 3G board so i guess its obvious which one i bought. (I won't get into why in this post) The earlier body DSMs were 195 HP or so, and are very mean off the line, i mean you can drop it at like 5K and hook hard! Plus they've got deep gearing and top end out the cornhole. That little red eclipse i test drove would kick my car's **** BUT you've got an L98, so you've got him out gunned by at least 30 HP and tons of torque stock. If you get traction you should take him. I think they run high 14's low 15's stock so you should be able to nail him. Gook luck let us know how it goes!
