Almost all apart for the pump..
Almost all apart for the pump..
Well the car is just about apart so I can do the fuel pump. I'm going to do the shocks and springs while I'm at it to. It looks like I'll have to spend some more money, the cat and intermediate pipe are shot.
Hopefully I'll have it all back together soon, its sad to see it all jacked up like this.

If I were you I'd do a catback setup while I was there.. you're gonna have to spend to replace it all anyways.
Springs, shocks, lca's, panhard rod and bushings are a good thing to get at while its all down...
good luck, if ya need a hand toss a pm or post.

Catback is right, my intermediate pipe is shot and so is the cat. If I had two more years I wouldn't have to do the emissions but it won't pass without a cat. I've never touched the exhaust system on this but it looks like someone has done some half-*** performance mods. My intermediate pipe is about 2.5 but the tailpipe is 2..what the heck??
If it was stock it would likely cost me around $150.. now it looksl ike I'll be going with Dynomax or Flowmaster for around $500..

I hate going to fix something and then you find out that theres even more to be fixed! Thats the worst feeling ever bud, I feel for ya.
But if your going with an aftermarket catback, screw spending 500 bucks! www.hi-performance.com has a hooker catback for 82-85 (I think, not positive, might be 87 or something) for 330. If it doesnt fit right on your car you just have to weld it after the cats instead of bolting it on using their flange. I suppose you could modify the flanges or whatever but welding it should be no big deal, and not expensive for a shop to do. It also sounds pretty nice, personally I like it more than the flowmaster because at wot the hooker shines where the flowmaster doesnt. Flowmaster has a much louder idle sound if thats what you want though. hooker is also supposed to flow better. And not many people dont think the dynomax is crap... Anyway good luck with your fuel pump and exhaust and I hope you dont find more bad crap!

The place where I got my stuff done will probably get you a deal, they were offering 2.5 mandrel for $180, 3 inch for $225 intermediates. Toss in a flowmaster, tailpipes ($60 for 3 inch, $40 for 2.5) and dynomax cat probably swing you only $500 or less even...
Irocker was the guy that pointed it out to me when I wanted to get a flowmaster, Master Performance in Brampton.
The only thing I'm not sure about is the dynomax cat... I got mine back when I was in cali and it cost me just a shy over $100 US, not sure what they'll charge here though...
I personally like the dynomax cat, a big improvement over stock I can tell you for sure, performance and sound wise. With the stock it had a consistent sound indicative of it being very restrictive having to pass through at a certain pressure like it was filtered, now its more inconsistent sounding, still a bit restrictive like something's in the way but like its just finding a way around through etc but even with the stock muffler it sounded a whole lot better due to higher flowing cat alone.
I noticed a set of the pants gain from the dynomax cat than I did with the flowmaster, the flowmaster just gave me a nice idle rumble and louder wot.

I think 3" would be too big for my little 6. I'll likely swap it out for either a 305 or a 350 later but I don't know when that will happen. I think if I stick to 2.5 it would be good for both. I thought that the flowmaster mufflers sound like crap on the 6's? I tried to get a price on a dynomax and they couldn't give me one (National Exhaust). I think I'll do ok price wise now, I can get the intermediate for $98, the tailpipes for $10 each, the cat for $96 and a flowmaster for $150. Does that place in Brampton sell the Dynomax cat? Any clue?

A Flowmaster will more than likely sound like *** on a V6. It'll have a real "blatty" sound, lol. You may want to go with a Borla or Magnaflow.

The hooker system is nice, but if you wanna hear a really nice sounding Flowmaster system, remind me to pop by sometime. I've been told by a few people that it is...unique.

Actually, as far as the V6 with the Flowmaster, I've heard a 4th Gen (3.4L I think?) and it almost sounded like a V8...not a bad sound at all. I'm not sure how much the 2.8L would differ, but I think it would sound okay. Magnaflow has a good sound to, just a little more aggresive.

Dave's Flowmaster does sound good. My Flowmaster was garbage. I've been happy with the Borla so far but it doesn't sound as good as Dave's. JeffBird has the Hooker kit on his car. I havn't heard it yet but it's supposed to sound pretty sweet.

Ideally I think I want something that isn't going to sound like crap and that isn't going to be really expensive. I knew that I was potentially going to have to replace exhaust parts and I thought that it was stock so I accounted for that when I priced out parts and bought what I've got now. I never realized that there were 2.5 pipes on this until I blocked it up and detached the intermediate pipe from the cat. My '85 was made at the very end of the year when they switched over to an 86 production run. Technically according to the VIN my car doesn't exist, so I've run across little suprises like this before. :P

Oooooohhhh ya I know who your talking about... half of the kemptville population.:sillylol:
Come to think about it, easy zdrr and I saw a 4th gen v6 with a 3inch catback to flowmaster setup.. sounded pretty good, just dunno how a 2.8 would do, but you never know...
I'd imagine the larger piping would make for a good deep sound no matter what engine then the flowmaster, not really great like borla in making things sound good, will transmit whatever sound your engine inherently makes. If I had the stock gm cat back on my car I'm sure it wouldn't sound nearly as pleasant as it does now.

On my '82 Firebird , I ran staight pipe from my cat back. As long as you keep the cat on, it will sound pretty tough. BTW the muffler is not mandatory for an e-test, just the cat and a leak free setup. My mechanic did the setup for me, and it did sound good. I loved revving it up and hear the crack of the exhuast...at idle you will hardly notice it.Well...sorta
Well after some checking around it looks like I can get parts for a complete system Cat & Back for about $410 for a flowmaster system and $320 for a flowpro? Then of course the installation on top of that. Master performance told me about $850 for a flowmaster system and $1350 for Borla. I'm getting a friend to check into a few things for me but I think I'll buy the parts and then have one of the guys in the shop do the exhaust work. Argh.. pretty soon there won't be much left on the car that isn't new!
Sounds rough.. maybe can swing by master performance and try to swing you a deal, I've dealt with them a lot and are generally good people.
I think mp usually charges with the installation included, if the original wasn't on, all the better they can shave off time from that charge too. If not, the get the parts yourself and get someone to install would work out good, but seriously if you do get the parts yourself, if you can assemble the whole thing and put it on yourself, maybe pay for a weld only in the process if its a complete cat back setup...
I'm thinking of having them do my headers, y-pipe cutout since my left arm is in rough shape at the moment and I have nightmares thinking about header removal...
