throwing this idea out there..

I have been thinking alot about building a 302.. I know you need a 283 crank wtih 4.00in bore block.. Now could I use one of those cranks in a 87-up roller motor? Or would the journals be to small or big?or can I buy a crank from someone?

Thanks

I've heard that you can use the crank that came in the "baby LT1" 4.3 V8 that was available in Chev Caprice's. I remember reading an article that came out a few years ago where Chevy built a one off 97 Z28 that had a 302 LT1 motor in it. I remember reading that they used the LT1 block, with the crank from the baby LT1 motor, and they got 302cid. Might be something to look into at least.

Find a complete 283. Have the block bores sonic tested.
If, any of the bores don't pass the sonic test they can be sleeved.
Then bore the motor to 4.00" Use 302 pistons.

Engine builders used to build this before GM got the idea to build a Factory 302.

You're much more likely to find a good 283 core than a 302 crank.

- use 88-92 4 bolt 4 inch bore roller sbc
- use L99 crank from '94-'96 Gen.II 4.3 liter V-8 (single rear seal)
- use L99 rods from '94-'96 Gen.II 4.3 liter V-8 (5.94 inch)
- use LT4 pistons
- use flame retard paint

Makes a 302 roller block. easy to find parts, journals fit, pistons at the right height. The flame retardent paint is what you'll use when all the peckerheads who don't know sh*t flame you for building it and not a 350.

You'll also need that wacky harmonic damper that the L99's used, I think. I'd rather build a 383 but the 302 would really have the cool factor nailed.
