a buddy of mine told me to open the trottle and put water in it to take out some carbon or something that makes it ping

Stock dampers are notorious for shifting as the inner and outer rings are not one piece but held together by an elastomer. If this started after changing the timing chain I would verify that your damper timing marks are correct.
Your friend is talking about blowing out any carbon deposits which cause detonation. It's easier with a FI car to just use a good FI cleaner, it will remove carbon deposits when you go WOT.

Not to mention the fact that your friend is dead wrong...using a product like Seafoam to clean carbon deposits through a vacuum line is OK...just make sure that you don't hydrolock the engine by inducing too much Seafoam at one time.

Yeah, pouring water into the TB is never a good idea.

Good luck,

Good one

Kind of like washing the engine compartment with the hose and shorting out the alternator

How many miles on the engine? Oil consumption causes pinging too...usually pretty big consumption...

The hydraulic lifters take up the slack in the valvetrain, so unless you are running a solid lifter cam...don't worry about it.

Could be a number of things, carbon deposits, AND NO the water trick does not hurt the engine, if your careful, but you could clog your cat if your chambers have a lot of carbon, I like to to it with B12 chemtool though instead of water. There is some really (don't remember the name) good stuff that hooks up to your fuel rails.
Could be lotsa other things though, leaning out at higher rpm's, A vacuum leak, burning oil as the one person said, and even new dampners don't always line up exactly right with the timing marks, but you usually have a couple degree's leeway before detonation on a stock motor, could be poor coolant circulaton causing hot spots around the combustion chambers.
All kindsa things can cause detonation, and some feed into eachother in kind've a viscious cycle. Start by running some cleaner through thoguh, that's the most common.

What is your setup? Carb, EFI?Its getting so hot down here now that doesnt help much. I was getting alot of detonation from my new motor. I tried everthing found out when the new exhuast went on that one of the cats was blocked. Still made over 300 rwhp with a blocked cat.

How is the fuel pump? Maybe not keeping up with the demand on the topend. Is this a new combo? maybe just need to drop back on the timing in the rpm where its pinging.

Good luck on the water deal...I can afford cleaner in the can...

Definitely adjust the timing if you are able...

i saw a fellow student in college adding water to his 2.5 liter s10. needless to say, the following week he was replacing his motor. come to find out, he had a huge hole in the #1 piston. if you must use water, please use a spray bottle, and apply it in a fine mist. best of luck, tom
