The vortech heads will require you change the intake manifold as it is not the standard intake bolt pattern. If I remember correctly, the fast burn heads have the same intake pattern as the vortech heads and will not work with the tpi intake or the SD vortech tpi base. The AFR heads and the LT4 hot cam will be a good combination in my book.

He's right....the vortecs and fast burns have a different bolt pattern...and you have to buy the $400 manifold to go w/ them. So if you got the fastburns, it would run you about $1500 for heads and manifold. The vortecs are only $450....plus the $400 manifold.....$850 for the vortecs and manifold...that's not bad at all. The AFRs and HOT cam make a PERFECT combo....but the AFRs will run you upward of $1500...about $1250 for the heads, then you gotta get a hole drilled for the fan switch, get the heads milled to get the correct combustion chamber, and something else I can't remember....will run you $1500-$1700 w/ shipping....but then you gotta either siamese the intake manifold to handle the flow, or by an aftermarket for $300. The AFRs w/ HOT cam would give you the most power, but for a LOT more than the vortecs and vortec manifold.

I got the same combo. AFRs 190+LT4 HC. I got my AFRs from this site www.tenperf.com. Dave of tenperf.com was recomended to me by moderator Willie, on this site and I think he has the best prices according to my research. I paid $1450 for a set w/all the exta drillings and stuff for TPI, but I had mine milled to 64cc chambers($150). Other than that he'll sell you a set for $1300 shipped. That's not bad sinse shipping is usually about $60-70, so it does figure into the price.

Yes....the HOT cam will work w/ both of em. And if you get the heads bare, just make sure you buy springs that will handle the lift....but if you buy em assembled, you dont have to worry about that.

If you want the best possible performance, then the answer is yes. My friend swapped in a LT4 hot cam in a 305 and it ran way too rich even with the Adjustable fuel pressure regulator. It may not run up to 100% without a custom burn chip.

YES that's a good price.....$1,077 for heads, cam and intake....you can't beat that. Most aftermarket heads alone are $1100 plus. And Derfrank is right....to get your car to run like you'd like it, you'll need a chip burned.

The L31 heads need some work for this--studs changed or at least pinned, top of valve guides cut. You also are overlooking the price of springs, retainers, special bolts for those heads, and don't forget the 1.6 rockers that hot cam is rated with.
Get the AFR's or you always will wish you did and spend the rest of your days explaining how your set is "just about as good as AFR heads"!!---
Check out the price for the hot cam and kit from Chev as this is a real deal for matched components from someone you can trust.

Still cheap for roller rockers, quality springs, light retainers, and the cam----You need this stuff to make the L31's work with the cam or run something else. The price you are looking at for the vortecs is for the non-upgraded head and you will need better springs anyway and what about rockers???? Thats what makes the kit so appealing. I went with AFR's even though it was hard to justify at the time---every time I think about it now I know I made the right choice!
I am putting together another motor with vortecs and the hot cam kit. Will be carbed for a 84 Z. So I have delt with both combo's. The vortecs aren't such a deal when one sets them up right and buys the extra stuff.
Good luck whatever you deciede------Jack
